I went into a Sports Authority yesterday to see if they’ve stocked up for the upcoming hunting season. I was shocked to see they no longer sell firearms or ANY hunting gear. No calls, scents, camo, stands, nothing. I asked an employee what the deal was and they said all the New England stores, and soon maybe all their stores will stop selling firearms and hunting gear. He didn’t know why and seemed to disagree with the decision. Sounds like an attempt at political correctness. Not that they’ll miss it, but they’ll never get my business again.

They could have they just decided the products were low margin. I wouldn't attribute anything to PC-ness until more information is known. Then again, Sports Authority didn't get much of my business anyway, they can't compete with Academy.

Our store here sells the goods still. Funny thing is, they keep the pistols in the safe and only display the price tag in the display case.

The one in my town is supposedly going to stop carrying firearms. The employee I asked about it said it was a staffing issue due to federal regulations.

Apparently they have a hard time recruiting people 21 years of age or older to work there.

our SA gets so little traffic compared to the whorehouse (sportsmans warehouse). but that didnt stop SA from completely remodeling their store, and adding handguns to their inventory. previously they only sold long guns.

then again, every retailer in alaska operates differently than in the lower 48.

The Farmington, CT Sports Authority totally remodeled within the past year and reintroduced a firearms dept. after a hiatus of many years. Just because a store employee said something, that doesn't automatically make the New England generalization true, even though it's remotely possible. Their hunting dept. is mostly gone except for shooting accessories, ammo and air guns. :p

Talk to the manager of the Tyson's Corner VA store. He said they stopped selling handguns some time ago as part of a law suit settlement. Said it didn't impact their western stores, but it did apply to Virginia stores.

At the time he didn't care because they didn't sell many handdguns due to Fairfax County's three day waiting period. NOw that the wait is history, he wishes he could cause with Galyan's gone and Blue Ridge the only game in Fairfax, he'd have no problem taking away their business.

Last time I went there - they had a bunch of rifles and hunting supplies.

Here in Miami, most of the Sports Authority outlets still sell guns and ammo. Some in the 'upscale' areas dont.

The removal of the hunting category from certain stores has nothing to do with the company getting out of the hunting/firearms business. Its all about making money. They removed firearms from certain stores because the amoutn of inventory and space it took up did not make as much money as it could filled with something else.
Trust me when I say that TSA is not getting out of the firearms business, our corperate headquarters is in Colorado and there is quite a bit of hunting business still being done in our western stores. Just some of the stores were not doing much business in hunting.
Its cool with me, because I am getting most of those guns that were sitting in those stores and I am selling them here at my store. There are some good deals that were left on the shelves! Awhile ago I got a Steyer Pro-Hunter 7mm for 320 bucks out the door. it was sitting in some store in Missouri
