I would like to attempt to organize some sort of regular THR get together for the SF Bay Area.

The Setting? Ideally, an outdoor range such as Sunnyvale Rod and Gun Club.

Northern California shooters, check in.

That would explain why I couldn't find you at Reed's last First Monday. Must have been a TFL thing.

Reset. Ready.

San Francisco present and accounted for sir.

A range day at Los Altos sounds great; I need to shot my rifles more and I really like that range (especially now that they have the 100 yrd range covered)

HRG: Sorry I missed you - yes, its time for a "Reset".

I like the folks at Reed's enough, but the vibe there just doesn't compare to being outdoors on a sunny afternoon.

Plus, I want rifle and shotgun capabilities, plus the option for us to hang out in the parking lot and check out each other's stuff.

I'm thinking that a regular Saturday shoot with a fairly wide 'window' (say, 10AM - 4PM) would give everyone flexibility.

What say ye? Any preference between Sunnyvale and Los Altos ranges? I'm leaning toward Sunnyvale because yearly dues are low... Los Altos membership requires purchase of a 'share' which is multiple thousands of dollars. I'd like to shoot somewhere I will eventually 'belong'.

I've never shot at Sunnyvale; but it doesn't matter to me. Either one, I'm still driving down from the City.

Count me in.

Will make it if a range more central to the geography of the bay area is found and I don't have to work. In other words, I don't have to fight my way through San Francisco.

What about Chabot

Chabot looks good - would the other South Bay / Mid-Peninsula folks mind driving up north a bit?

Personally, Chabot looks great to me, and based on the people who have reported so far, it seems much closer to the geographical 'center of mass' for our crew.

Anyone else like this idea?

I'm almost afraid to go. With the attitudes of the people on this board, flames (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14612&perpage=25&pagenumber=2) , I'm kinda worried about getting lynched.
Or my fave, "Declared an enemy combatant, and buried alive in a big hole." What a fascist. Sheeesh.

I'm up in Petaluma. Got an outdoor range right down the road too. I doubt most folks would be into coming out here though, so I'll vote for Chabot on the chance that the planets line up and the wife and I both have a weekend off so she can handle the kids. It sounds like a lot of fun though.

All these suggestions are fine with me, it is the same distance for me to Chabot, Sunnyvale or San Rafael (San Rafael???? There is an outdoor range there?)

BUT, if I had my rathers I would vote for Los Altos Rod and Gun (beautiful setting, and the "shoot anything you want here" range).

I would be interested, someplace to bring my centerfire rifles as I have not even fired them in months.

Chabot is pretty nice. Entry's about $12/day, I think. Haven't been there in a while, so don't hold me to it. Big place, ranges out to 100 yds, but no shotgun stuff, if'n I member kee-rectly. Strictly paper-punching. They gotta 200-yard range where you can shoot .50 BMG's, and metallic silhouettes, but it's only open to members. :(

Sunnyvale. Easy to get to, right by 280. Ranges out to 100 yds, with some restrictions on calibers. (Calibers might be open now. They have IRRITATING neighbors who require loud calibers to be fired through baffled tunnels. This tunnel complex cought fire a few years back, which made for noise issues. Tunnels have been re-built.) Entry's prolly about $10. Personally, I haven't gone to this place since before the fire, as I ran into miserable customer service which left a bad impression. However, the place is under new ownership, and I've heard it's a reasonable place. Not sure about shotgun stuff. Not a very big facility, and also paper-targets-only.

Metcalf. Between San Jose and Morgan Hill, 40-ish minutes from Palo Alto. I used to work in Morgan Hill, and I've driven past the gate, but never made it inside. Rifle range to 100 yds, maybe more. Read someplace about hanging metal targets.

Los Altos Rod and Gun Club. This is my usual pick. Full set of ranges to 100 yds, electric trap and manually-run skeet, and the kind of shooting that I do most, plinking reactive targets at 40 and 100 yds. (Tin/alum. cans and plastic jugs only. Useta be you could shoot whatever, but some dummy brought an empty camp-stove propane tank and shot it with an AR on the 40-yd. range. It bounced all the way back to the firing line!) This place is on top the ridge along Hwy 35, has some great views, and is a very nice drive through the trees, abeit a bit long. Worth it, though, as this is a great place. Nice folks, fantastic facility. $10 entry, membership was $250/year, last time I looked. Going to this range has made it unnecessary for me to even bother to check out anywhere else, which is why my descriptions are lacking. Note: If it's overcast/rain-ish, this range is IN the clouds. Not much of a winter facility as it's usually muddy, cold, and wet, but it's spring-ish looking now, so if it's not actually raining, we're in like Flynn.

Los Altos RAGC. (http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com/)

:D D'oh! Look what I remembered from TFL! Everyplace else to shoot (http://www.california.com/~jtchew/BAranges.html#national) to be found in the Bay Area, and then some. I shoulda looked here before I wrote this post, but hey, you folks can read, and I'm a lousy typist.

Now we've got some choices! :)

atek3,

You have to remember that most of the people on this bulletin board are not from California. As such, they have little tolerance for "useful idiots". Unfortunately, like it or not, all of the people involved with the disruptive protests were willing (or unwitting) tools of the Marxists.

Your "friends" at the protests- do they all know of your shooting hobby? Are they all respectful of it and appreciate the responsibility involved with owning a firearm? Or are they like my San Francisco "friends"- who launch into diatribes about dead children and right-wing gun-nuts (always prefacing it with "Not you Mark, I know you are a responsible person")? I work at Sansome and Pine, and watched from our office window as about 10 "peaceful protesters" blocked traffic in front of the stock exchange, then started pounding on this guy's van. One of the protesters was pointing his video camera at the driver, and went up to his open window and stuck the camera through the open window in his face!

The "disrupt and harass" tactics were planned in advance, everyone knew that the intent was to try to shut down the financial district. Your friends who went knew what they were getting into.

But anyway, no-one would lynch a fellow gun owner- there aren't enough of us here to afford to lose one!!! There is a difference between debate and violence, the difference between us and the gang bangers is that we can debate without resorting to the other.

ALL-RIGHTY THEN. Let's keep this on topic. The subject is where we should shoot, and Hand_Rifle_Guy has - through his vivid description - raised the Los Altos option, at least on my list.

Highway 35, running along the upper ridge of the beginning of the Santa Cruz mountains, is a breaktaking drive. It's also more of a haul, but I swear, the best driving I've done in my life has been on that road and Highway 1.

I'm wondering if any of the SF and Marin-ites wouldn't mind the dreadful trek down south, perhaps?

Let's keep the ball rolling in a positive direction and on-topic. Atek3 - bring some of those Berkeley babes down, man. ;)

Sven,

Just make a decision and tell us all to like it.

Oh, and I like Los Altos too...

PS I was just letting atek know he would still be welcome at any shoot I attend, but not to confuse protesters with law-abiding citizens.

Sven,

And everyone in the Bay Area, Rob Leatham will be at Reed's Indoor Range this weekend. On both Sat/Sun at 9:00am he will be doing some shooting. This is a rare chance, for us in this area, to see a shooter of this stature. Come on out and see what a shooter can really do.

Reed's Indoor Range, 1100 Duane Ave. Santa Clara. (408) 970-9870.

Maybe one of us can challenge him into a little one on one shooting, or not.

Alrighty, I'm going to just make a decision and post it here - prob. Los Altos. Any range that allows people to shoot rapid fire with rimfire is cool in my book.

I just wanted to give those who have strong opinions one way or another a chance to raise their voices.

I'll wait until a few more people check in, and then post the plan.

Los Altos works for me just fine. But Hand_Rifle_Guy wasn't kidding; need to watch the weather. It can get pretty foggy and cold up there. And start saving your plastic bottles now 'cause they have a faucet right next to the tin can range so you can fill them up.

I live in pleasanton but work in los altos.. and the range is actually in saratoga hills... but i would prefer chabot. the old livermore range was cool but i think it closed. reeds (the old nat shooting club) has about the same cust service as teh reeds shop itself. targetmasters has a bunch of gunshop goofs working there.. jeez i think we should just buy a bunch of land out in the valley and start a commune... chabot or los altos is cool for me

South Bay here, usually shoot rifle and pistol at the Metcalf Rd. County range in San Jose. Sometimes shoot revolver and pistol at Target Masters in Milpitas. I'm open, might be able to make a local Bay Area shoot.

Discussion with our friends on the left is not a problem. They would not want to include a really violent peace protest... We have all the guns!! But of course we few and band of brothers on The High Road would never fire upon the unarmed. We would debate them 'til their wrong headed brain turned into ballistic gelatin.
