I just saw mention on the news that Polish SFs, called GROM, are working in the desert. Anyone ever heard of these guys? What's their training like? Are they any good?

The only info I have on them is from an article by Leroy Thompson, and he found them to be quite good. I believe they cross-trained with Soviet Spetsnaz, who weren't too shabby themselves. And since the end of the Cold War, they've been working with our guys quite a bit. Are they as good as our guys? Maybe not in technical areas. But they've got heart, and that'll take them a ways. Combined with the experience they're getting right now, they are well on their way.

I saw a report where these Polish forces were working with Navy Seals and boarded a suspicious ship looking for explosives. The ship turned out to be abandoned, but tense duty nonetheless.

I believe they were based largely on the Soviet Spetznas doctrine and training protocols, as Buzz notes.
If they're anything like the Spetznas was, they should be very good.

The Poles are a people who know the feel of the jack boot across the throat. They aren't fooled by the French/German hypocrites. I will bet that they fight with skill, heart and intensity. Rather have them on my six than the Canadians. (OK, before I get my gluteus flamed: some Canadians.)

Years back, Discovery had a series on Special Forces units. Poland's was (then) the 1st Pomeranian Air Assault Bde., commissioned during WWII.
They seemed to be very heavy into close quarters, non-firearms and unarmed combat (to the extent that each man was the equivalent of a black belt).

These are people descended from the folks that made Sten's out of scrap and stood alone against the Nazi's while everyone else looked the other way in 1939.
Then they were also the first to tell Gorbachev and company to take a hike when the walls were still up everywhere else. The Poles were the first crack in the USSR.
Oh, I forgot, none of those other countries count with the Democratic leadership because they aren't France or Germany, the only real countries in Europe.
I'd take "Stash" and his good ole boys any day of the week.

Argus Hamilton said last week that only 300 Poles had deployed. The majority of their forces would remain at home until it was clear which way the Germans were going.....:p
