Think I can get away with a Molon Labe hat?

I got a job with the IU food service. They provide a hat (very preferable to a hairnet) but I was thiking of getting a Molon Labe hat. Personal hats are allowed as long as they don't have "personal or political statements". I'm thinking that most people probably don't know what it means and if anyone asks, I'll say it's a Greek soccer team or something (as much as I would hate to be associated with soccer :barf: ).

Thoughts?

If it doesn't say anything that anyone will understand, why would you bother taking the risk of getting in trouble for wearing it?

Well, I guess it would be my own little in-joke.

Zero, which dorm you working in? I lived in the dorms for 2 years in undergrad.

Maybe I'll drop by the alma mater and say hello. Still serve that yummy IU ice cream? :D

I got kicked out of the Wilkie Dorm in 1987 for standing up to the jack-booted RA that was assigned to our floor. Long story, but my polite refusal to do something he had no legal authority to ask me to do resulted in him calling IU campus cops. They filed a report, report was used by head of Residence Life to kick me out. Got a great apartment at Summit Point (hope it's still around) with a guy who ended up selling me my first .22 pistol. He and I used the on-campus indoor range all the time to shoot .22, 9mm, and .357.

Go for the hat, even if nobody will get it.
Go Hoosiers.

I'm working here in Collins, which is also where I'm living. Seems to be full of hippies (what college isn't, of course) but it seems to be a 15 minute walk from everything and the Union is only like two blocks away.

Wear the hat. I wear mine all the time, and nobody ever asks me what it means.
People are just oblivious. Nobody will pay any attention to what your hat says.

They will probably think it's some Greek frat thing.

Bah! IU hippies. :D

Don't worry, Zero. They are only situational hippies. You know, sticking their tongues out at Mom and Dad by not shaving and smoking dope.

Spoiled little brats raised in the 'burbs of Indy or Chicago who feel guilty for their wealth and ease. *&^%$# the MasterCard Marxists, and their supporting cadre of professors who feed their guilt so they can have tenure.

Wear your hat, especially around the hippies. Tell the hippie chicks it refers to a one-hitter or bong. :D

Moonbeam to Zero: "Like what does your hat mean, man?"

Zero to Moonbeam: "It means 'come and take it' like what I say to The Man when it comes to hemp. The Man is sooo harsh man, hemp is just an herb, man, it comes from Nature, man. George Washington smoked it, man. I just cry out for justice to women and minorities who are really hurt by The Man, man."

Moonbeam and Princess Headband: "Let's go back to our place! [El Tejon note: I mean to go back and study for class here]" :D

So, Zero, by wearing your hat not only will you educate the public, especially hippie chicks, but you will increase your study skills and test-taking abilities.

One of my fave anti-hippie black ops was the time I organized a fake "guns and ammo" drive for the people of the Baltic States. I formed the Committee in Solidarity with the People of the Baltic States and handed out flyers outside Woodburn, etc. and the Union proclaiming that I was collecting guns to smuggle into the Baltic States to fight the Evil Empire (circa 1990, during the crackdown in Riga, inter alia).

They called a Faculty Meeting for me on that one! :D My record was not exactly unblemished--should have seen what I did for the Ortega elections! :D

My club may be coming to IU, I'll send you a PM. :)

Yes... Buy many hats... You will need one of each color. And then a spare in each... Then maybe some extras to rotate when it rains, you really don't want to wear a wet hat...

Excellent...

Bwa HA HA HA!

But then again, I am kind of biased. :p

Even if somebody asks you what it means, why not tell them?

"What does that mean?"
"'Come and take them.'"
"Take what?"
"More potatoes. Here you go."

The great thing about the Molon Labe hats is that you can tailor your response to the person and still be truthful.

"It's from ancient Greek history."
"It's what the ancient Greeks said to the Persians at Thermopylae."
"It's a statement of defiance to force from ancient Greece."
"It's what the Spartans said when told to surrender to a more powerful force."
"It's what the Spartans said when told to lay down their arms."

and so on. All these are true. To someone who has ears to hear, you can say it's a response to someone telling you to give up your arms.

Exactly as okie said! Wear mine alot, as in #1 hat. Been asked 3 times what it meant. Best was the first: cute blonde at stop & rob; "What's your hat say?", "Molon labe", "What?", "Molon labe, it's Greek, it means "'come and get 'em'". Winked and walked out the door. Need to go back there sometime, soon.

2nd time I told the whole story, she was a farm gal, knew she'd understand.

Wear the hat, and stay safe!

I think its sad when a phrase written in Greek is almost guaranteed to pass undeciphered on a university campus.

If anyone asks, tell them it is a historical reference.

Maybe it'll encourage the smart ones to do some research, Of course, when I wear mine around campus (University of South Carolina) the professors stare in awe and the girls ask which frat I belong to

getting out of college with an unblemished record?
That's disgusting.
Didn't you learn anything??

Wear the dam'd hat.
Have fun break some rules, in 30 years no one will remember

I bought my hat in the last batch that came out. A good estimate would be to say that 3000 people have seen it, four asked what it means. The four were all close friends.

Just tell them that "Molon Labe" happens to be your favorite type of beer, which is brewed in Pennsylvania near Latrobe.
