Rumor from some friends based in Germany that the Army may move bases out of Germany and into the Czech Republic where they actually like us.

I stress, this is only a RUMOR.

Sock it to em (the Germans) though! :D

I think that it is a very good idea. Put the money into a county that isn't actively hindering us.

Bring the bases, soldiers, and budget home, and use them to reinforce our borders.

I kind of like the British model -- strategic islands scattered across the globe.

A shifting of bases away from a Cold War alignment is long overdue in my mind. They are in locations that are not ideally suited to address the hot spots in today's world.

Romania or Bulgaria? Closer to God's Monkey House.

BTW, I've always wanted to do those tours of the Romanian or Bulgarian army bases where you get to shoot all day for a price.

We recently did some workup manuevers in Poland, too.
Pretty sure this has come up before, I think in Stars and Stripes, may have been posted on this or another, similar board, so I'm not concerned about my clearance: the best rumor is that we'll keep some skeleton crews with the pre-postioned supplies in a few places here and there, make them hardship-duty stations (1 year or less tours, unaccompanied) in a more expeditionary-units approach.
But then, I may be full of it.

having worked in one of a number of jobs where one can end up out on the :cuss: end of nowhere I'd like people to remember that having intelligence assets in position is nice, but a few small buildings surrounded by a huge antenna field (as a f'rinstance)does NOT make a good defensive position under any circumstances. We need TROOPS out there too.

If we want to pull the military back to CONUS, I think three things need to happen.

1. A huge investment in shipping and airlift assets. We need to be able to move an entire division to a battle zone within 30 days. We can't do it right now.

2. Develop a division that's lighter than a heavy mechanized or tank division, but has more firepower than the 82nd, 101st, and 10th Mountain Divisions. Ideally, it would be airmobile.

3. Give the Marines more money and let them handle the world's problems. A Marine Amphibious Unit has its' own organic infantry, airpower, armor, airlift, and sealift, and they can actually get to the battlefield and be able to get into the fight, instead of waiting for their logistical tail to catch up. The Army packs a hellacious amount of firepower, but it takes them forever to get into the area. Future opponents will not be dumb enough to give us time to get the Army in-theater.

On a related note: I wonder if Turkey would notice if we moved Incirclik to the new/old nation of Kurdistan?
I see that the Kurds are busy building airfeilds for us in case we need some. :)

I dunno 'bout pulling back to the ConUS, but pulling out of Germany is a distinct possibility. Their interests and ours are now no longer anywhere near close; this will come up again, and they'll block us from using our German bases to deal with stuff the Germans don't want dealt with :scrutiny:.

Not acceptable. Esp. now that it's clear the Russians aren't going to come pouring across the border .

I would move our troops back to the USA or maybe build new military bases in Iraq and move them there.

It will protect our oilfields and we will be in a good place for future invasions of Iran and Syria.

Good points. I was speaking more from the gut than the head, I guess, but I would hope we could at least reduce our overseas presence and use that manpower to contain our borders from terrorist infiltration. Considering how easily people cross our southern border now it seems like a fairly trivial matter for a terrorist to get across the same way, with a backpack full of bio-terror.
