I was wondering what the recoil is like from this load? It is the federal tactical double o buck 9 pellet load. It would be fired out of my soon to be aquired remington 870 hd if that makes any differance at all? I haven't shot any shotguns at all just my ak and a cetme .308 for long guns.

My brother shot a 1oz. lead slug out of a 26'' shotgun at the range a few weeks back and he said it was stiff in the recoil dept. Is this anything like a tactical load would be as far as recoil goes? Also how are 12 gauge shotguns as far as recoil goes? I'am sure its nothing I can't manage. Thanks for any help

it's not much less than your typical 00 buck hunting loads.

it is not stiff in the recoil department by any means.


out of my mossberg 500, it recoils about as much as my number4mk1 in .303.

That is what I use (LE132 00) in my 870 and I find it very soft-shooting. The slugs (LE127 RS) are also easy on the shoulder.

You can handle it, it'll just feel harder than any rifle you've fired so far. A shotgun will bruise much easier if you are careless about proper stock placement.

We shot some Fed 00 Tactical and Fed 00 regular loads and then did the same with slugs, Tactical loads and regular.

For the 00 buck, the tactical produced a more subdued recoil. That isn't to say that it was pleasant, just that it wasn't as bad and the regular full power load. The tactical load took the edge off, so to speak.

For the slugs, I really think there was a world of difference. Tactical and regular both produced much more recoil than the 00 buck loads. I may be a wimp, but the 2 full power slugs I shot were rather painful. I went on to shoot another 10 or so of the tactical load slugs and while my shoulder was still in pain from the full power loads, the tactical load slugs were significantly less painful to shoot.

The bonus to shooting the Tactical loads according to a local firearms trainer is that folks who don't shoot shotguns regularly do better with the tactical loads as they can recover more quickly after recoil to ain and shoot again. Apparently, this is especially relevant to many cops who only shoot shotguns very rarely.

I understand that the downside to the Federal Tactical loads is that they are at a slightly slower velocity. So you hit the bad guy with 9 pellets at 1240 fps instead of 1325. If the round is for personal defense and you are talking home interior distances, I think the tactical load will be plenty devastating.

Well, that is what I am counting on. I have opted to go with the tactical loads for our HD shotgun.

Mega,trust me on this. Before uncorking any heavy loads, get your form in order, the shotgun fitting you, and start things out with the lightest loads you can find. Sloppy form, bad fit and Magnumitis will have you building a flinch from Shot One.

Some Gun Shop Commandoes sneer at this approach. I've yet to see any of those good with a shotgun.

I like the stuff. The recoil is about the same as a 3 dram trap load and less than standard buckshot loads and substantially less than any of the magnum offerings. Even through my 6.5lb sxs, it's not uncomfortable to shoot. I carry a few rounds of 00 on my belt while bird hunting in the event I run into something larger and more threatening than a grouse.
