Thinking about getting a 10mm. I thought I read somewhere that you can feed them 40 S&Ws. Any truth to this?

You probably CAN do it, but you shouldn't. With the shorter .40 S&W case, headspacing will be on the extractor instead of the case mouth. You're likely to blow primers by doing this.

Also, feeding reliability will probably be compromised.

Now, if you buy a proper .40 S&W conversion barrel, you can do this safely. I know they're available for Glock 20s.

The only 10mm I know for sure you can safely shoot .40S&W out of is a Smith & Wesson model 610 ... which is a revolver.

Get your hands on a 610 and you can shoot .40 using moon clips.
Now, here's my personal opinion. I have the following 10 MM's:
Glock 20;
Colt Delta Elite; and
S&W 610.

While everyone is so Colt crazy, the S&W (while being a huge pistol) is more accurate and do to the thickness, seriously reduces the recoil. In the month that I've had it, I've gone through 1000 hot rounds.

Just my opinion.

I think what you may have read is people refering to 40 S&W handload specs. 10mm with a lighter powder charge. More than one post has made that misleading statement...

there was a slide assembly floating around for the 1911 designed for .40 and 10mm.

it had two extractors.

Those guns have some issues.

Why shoot 40S&W when you could be shooting 10mm?

Bandit01, so how you like that 610?

Purely economical. Figure I can get away a lot cheaper for informal plinking/practice with 40 S&W WWB, Blazers, etc.

I've done it in my 1911 with no adverse effects. Wouldn't make a habit out of it, but it'll work in a pinch.

It will work. It's hard on the gun and could potentially lead to a dangerous situation if it's done habitually.

If my life depended on having a gun and all I had was a 10mm with .40 ammo, I'd do it in a heart beat.

Other than that, I wouldn't recommend it.

Not everything (in fact, very few things) that Ted Nugent does are a good idea. This is no exception.

Gonna slip this over to autoloaders by virtue of subject material. :)

Do it right and get the conversion barrel. A .40 in a 10mm semi auto would have to be held against the breechface by the extractor. I think alot of doing something it really wasn't designed to do would eventually cause the extractor to fail. Once or twice? Probably wouldn't hurt. Rule of thumb should be don't fire anything your gun wasn't chambered for (a conversion barrel is technically rechambering so it abides by this rule).

There's also the potential for buildup at the end of the chamber. There's a lip there that normally would but up against the case. With the shorter case there's a possibility that bullet material may be shaved off and build up. That could eventually cause a partial obstruction which would be a very bad thing.
