I recently saw a story on the news about a gas station attendant being shot by a "pump and run" suspect.
With the certain rise in gas prices due to Katrina, I believe this type of behavior may become a lot more common.

Let's keep our guard up at the pumps. I'd hate to hear a fellow Highroader got hit by a stray bullet from a fuel thief.

And be careful about paying and keeping a receipt.

A friend of mine was stopped by the cops after the credit card he swiped failed to register and he failed to notice. (Long story short--he was travelling with another person. He swiped the card and then headed to the bathroom. The other person pumped the gas assuming it was paid for. He returned to find the gas already pumped, everyone got in the car and departed.) He must have looked honest cause the cops just escorted him back to pay. They could have arrested him.

Keep in mind that many of those machines have a limit of $100, some are $80, Chevron is only $60.

Military Fuel Cans are your friend. ;)

Valero has a $50 limit. Or at least the one near my place does.
