I've been having some problems with my SVT-40. It's gotten to the point that I don't think I can fix it by myself. So, I made some calls around San Diego County today, seeking a gunsmith. But, each one I spoke with told me he knew nothing about SVT-40s, and didn't know another gunsmith who did have the skills.
Perhaps I'm laboring under a misunderstanding, but shouldn't a gunsmith be able to work on any type of firearm? Or, if it's a highly specialized profession, is there such a thing as a milsurp gunsmith? If there is, I need one.

I don't have any experience with the SVT40 but I'll point you to gunboards.com. Those guys can help you with Soviet issue weapons and maintenance/repair better than anyone else and can probably steer you in the right direction. Good luck whatever happens.
