Squared Circles

A relatively easy target this month…but with a slight twist.

7,8,9,10,X – That is the scoring ring series we are all used to seeing on our targets. But, it sure is difficult to get all your rounds to hit accurately at the center ring every time. Three rounds within the 10 ring is much more difficult than three into the 9 ring. Yet there would only be a difference of 3 points (10%) between those two targets. It sure seems that someone who can get a really good, tight group in the center should be rewarded more than that.

This months target attempts to fix that problem. The scoring rings are the squares of a sequence of points so the center ring scores increase rapidly.

Aim carefully and take your time. A good shot will help your score tremendously this month.

TARGET DOWNLOAD (http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/THR_SEPT.pdf) : http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/THR_SEPT.pdf

The standard distances will be 10 yards for Pistol and 25 yrds for Rifle. (plus 50 yrds and 100yrds may be attempted for supported rifle classes.)

THREE (3) ROUNDS PER TARGET THIS MONTH

Some reminders on match procedures:
You are expected to shoot the match targets only for score and only the approved number of targets for each class. You should not be shooting several match targets and submitting the best score.

Scoring:

Normally accepted scoring rules this month. Shots breaking the line into a higher scoring circle is scored at the higher value. Add up the scores from the three rounds.

UNSUPPORTED/FREEHAND CLASSES: 10yrds handgun, 25 yrds rifle
PISTOL STOCK - Standard pistols with barrels 6" or less
PISTOL RIMFIRE - .22LR Pistols
PISTOL SCOPED/IMPROVED - Any scoped pistol or with significant improvements from out-of-the-box or pistols with barrels more than 6".
RIFLE STOCK - Standard rifles with iron sights
RIFLE SCOPED - Any scoped rifle
RIFLE RIMFIRE - .22LR Rifle
AIRGUN PISTOL- un-scoped airgun
AIRGUN RIFLE – un-scoped air rifle

SUPPORTED/BENCHREST CLASSES
RIFLE STOCK SUPPORTED – Standard rifles with iron sights at 50yrds and/or 100yrds

I'm not familiar with match terminology. Does "unsupported/freehand" mean offhand, and not kneeling, sitting, or prone? Is the use of a shooting sling allowed?

Wayne - Welcome to the match. Yes, you have the right idea on "unsupported/freehand". We have been allowing the use of slings in this class.

One of these days I'll update the FAQ to include this info.

One more detail...
Since there are few shots and few scoring rings this month there is a good probabilty of tie scores. In the event of a tie the score posted first will have the advantage. So get out and shoot and POST YOUR SCORES! Don't wait until the last minute.

I shot all of these rather quickly because I had a lot of other things on my plate today. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it. :D

Maybe, if it's permissible, I'd like to shoot a couple of them again, later this month. If that's not allowed, maybe I could shoot them and post them, but not for competition.

CLASS: Stock Pistol, Les Baer
Distance: 10 yards
Score: 75 (25x3)

This is perhaps the best group I have shot in 30 years of competition. Even a blind hog can find an acorn.

NAME: Ankeny
CLASS: Scoped Rifle Supported, Customized Kimber 84M in .22-250.
Distance: 100 yards
Score: 75 (25x3)

This is almost cheating. The rifle is for all purposes a heavy varminter/light bench gun. I would imagine the majority of posters here could easily shoot 75 points with this gun under the conditions I encountered.

Well I finally made it to the range. I had a great time, but my shooting wasn't the best. I didn't get to make copies of my targets, but since my shooting is...slightly on the low side of mediocre, I don't think anybody will accuse me of cheating.

Anyway...

Red Tornado
Pistol Stock - Bulgarian Makarov
10 yards
Score - 34 (9,9,16)

You might ask, RT, why did you shoot the stock pistol class with a Mak? Well due to a brain fart, I somehow walked out of the house without any 9mm ammo, so my Sig P-226 just sat there watching. If I'd have shot the Sig, you can bet I would have scored 35 or 36 anyway. ;)

Red Tornado
Pistol Rimfire - Ruger 22/45
10 yards
Score - 41 (16,16,9)

Not bad for me, but I pulled the last shot and that's annoying. Oh well, I'll keep working on my concentra...hey, what's that?!?

Red Tornado
Pistol improved - CZ52
10 yards
Score - 17 (4,9,4)

Now the question everyone wants to ask. How did I improve the CZ52? Look at the scores, apparently I didn't. :p I just wanted to shoot another pistol. If a 17 takes the pistol improved class, obviously that means nobody else shot it. I did try to polish the firing pin once, but that didn't help. BTW, if I hadn't forgotten 9mm ammo, I would have shot the Mak here.

Red Tornado
Rifle Stock - Remington 1903A3
25 Yards
Score - 33 (16, 16, 1)

Okay, okay, ***!!! There's that concentration problem again.

Red Tornado
Rifle Rimfire - Ruger 10/22
25 yards
Score - 50 (25, 16, 9)

Apparently something went crazy, because somehow there was a hole in the 25. Like Ankeny said, something about blind hogs....

Thanks for doing this Photo_guy. Once again it was loads of fun.

Little Loudmouth, ACP230:

Welcome back guys.

Tim Burke
September 25, 2005, 09:08 AM
I'd think your Officer's ACP would fall under Stock Pistol if you wanted it to do so. While it isn't box stock, the improvements aren't significant enough that it is more competitive than a box stock TRS. I thought Improved and Scoped were the same class. Maybe photo_guy will gives us a ruling.

photo_guy
September 25, 2005, 11:20 AM
Tim,
I agree. ACP230's Officer does not have what I would call "significant improvements" so it could be entered in stock pistol class. I would not put a trigger job and a replaced bushing into the improved class; I'm looking more for things like comp's, weights, major tightening of the action, etc. red dot's could go here or in scoped class.

[I actually don't think there is much you can do to an Officers model that would make it shoot that much better - that is one short barrel.]

I'm sure ACP230 was being very conservative in his judgement on classification. But, ACP230 may have another 'stock pistol' he wants to use for another entry and decide to place the Officers model in improved to free up a class.
