Ok, so somehow water made its way into my shotgun carrier, and well, now a whole side of the shotgun is covered in rust. Or it was, until I used CLP and tried to remove as much as possible. What should I use to remove all the rust? Or should I just take it to a smith that could probably do it really well?

A smith could do it and re-finish it if they're competent enough, but if you're strapped for cash like the time I was when my 870 got infested with rust, you can handle it yourself. Use steel wool (or sandpaper if it's really that bad - for your sake I hope not) and then use blueing PASTE. Do -not- use the liquid, it sucks. Wipe on, leave for 30 seconds, wipe off. Re-apply until a desirable finish is reached.

Just as Biaxident stated, use steel wool and Dulite's Kwikseal or something similar. CLP Breakfree or something similar would probably work just as well. With regard to the steel wool, 00 is what I use. Anything rougher may mar the finish on your 870. Spray the oil on the rusted area and lightly rub.
