OK gang-

I am not a shotgun hunter but will be going with a bud to hunt Texas turkey in April.

I only have an 870 in the shorter barrel synthetic stock, defensive-type 12 gauge, no chokes....

Is this even adequate for turkey hunting? I may or may not be able to borrow a "proper" rig.

Thoughts?

I assume you have an 18" or 20" IC barrel. The shotgun should be fine if you get a Rem Choke barrel and the proper choke for Turkey hunting. Cabela's Remington 870 barrel selection (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml?id=0005760212137a&navAction=push&navCount=1&indexId=&podId=0005760&catalogCode=XC&parentId=&parentType=&rid=) is fairly broad. A barrel is much cheaper than buying the whole shotgun and then you'll have it for any future hunts.

Steel,

That's all I use. You'll be limited in ammo selection, but it works just fine with a few rules to keep in mind (I use a 21" cylinder bore):

#6 High-Velocity Turkey loads only. They're at Walmart for about $7 per box of 10-15rd.
Don't take the shot until he's within 30yd. Be patiant, it will happen.
Don't move.
Keep your shotgun comfortably rested on your knee over leveled on a log. You don't wanna be fumblin around to get your gun ready when he's comin, because then it's too late.
Turkey are spooked easily. They do not like to see change in their woods. If they see a lump next to a tree, they'll bolt.
