Ok did a little pawnshopping today. Found a Stainless Springer Compact 1911 for $319. Would I be a complete fool to not buy this gun?? It was a little dirty and had no magazine but seemed to be in good shape. I think it had brushed sides but the top of the slide was more like beadblasted or somthing. I really wish it was a full size. Maybe I could trade it for a full size???

Or maybe you could wait for the place to open tomorrow, buy it, keep it, and gloat to everyone you meet?

I say go for it! How much do magazines cost? I'm wanting to say that I paid $20 per mag for some Kimber stainless 8 rounders for my .45. But then again mine is the full size Mil-Spec.

Tell the store $300 cash OTD and see if they go for it. Guns w/o mags even if they are a common, cheap magazine seem to get e deep discount sometimes at gunshops.

And if you want a full size you can trade or sell it.

It might be cheap because it is bad.
Can you arrange to testfire?

Ill ditto the "YES".......get it. If it has problems then SA will warranty it, fix it or replace it. Either way...its a great price.

I suspect kngflp knows full well he should buy the gun and he just wants to share his good fortune with the rest of us.

Offer them $300, if they say no, pay the full price. :D Either way, you are getting it for about $100 less than what would be a good deal, so I guess that makes it a great deal!
If I saw it for that price, I would have to buy it even though I don't need it. For that price, you really can't go wrong. There is no way you can lose money on it unless you really try.

Even if this were true, it's a 1911. Problems are easily fixed. Go for it.

I agree with Jim. I would arrange to test-fire if possible.
On the other hand, if you are familiar with 1911's you can probably field strip it and tell if there are any major issues (poorly fitted slide and frame, locking lugs battered, barreltobushingtoslide fit, etc.) Most anything else can be fixed relatively cheaply parts-wise and you can get a lot of the instruction from Kuhnhausen's book and/or 1911Tuner here.
Most problems with a 1911 not directly attributable to kitchen table gunsmithing are fixed by either a good extractor or a good magazine.
Also, check for overaggressive barrel "throating" and feed ramp "polishing" also known as Chronic Dremel Disease. Otherwise, it sounds like a great deal.

I bought it. It actually came with a S.A. 7 rd flush fit mag that was in the box. It has trijicon night sights on it and an after market beavertail. I broke it down and everything looks good. It has less wear on it than half the pistols I own. The barrel is in good shape as well. There was a little discoloration hidden under the Pachmayers which came off with steel wool. There wasn't any bad scrathes until I fumbeled putting the slide catch back in and scratched the slide.(Will I be able to buff that out?) Everything is fit well, and the feed ramp is still dull and looks to be untouched. I'm not sure if im gonna keep it or not but for $350 OTD I didn't figure I could loose anything trying it out.

That little scratch on the side is a common marking of many 1911's. It even has a name. It's called an "Idiot mark/Idiot scratch". :p

Leave the idiot mark alone. It saves you the trouble of putting one there yourself and you can always claim to have "bought it that way".
