Who makes your favorite .357/.38 revolver?

September 7, 2005, 09:21 PM
Who makes your favorite .357 or .38 revolver? And what is it? (No doubt a few people will post pics).
Right now I have three:
A Taurus 85 Total Titanium .38 in pimpin' blue;
A S&W 65 .357 4" w/wood grips; and
another S&W 65 .357 3" w/pac grips (LE trade-in, but beautiful).

All have great triggers, and all feel like heaven in my hands. My favorite is the one I happen to be holding at the time.
What about you?

All S&W revolvers are great, but the K frames, especially the 3" variants, are the best of the bunch. You'd have to look long and hard to find a better carry gun than that 3" M65.

I was fortunate enough to buy a 5 screw S&W model 15 with 4" barrel. I was hitting a 4" spinning target at 30+ yards. I just can't do that with my model 19 or my 27-3.

September 7, 2005, 09:54 PM
I have an older 6" model 66 Taurus that is a good gun but it's not in the same league as my 6" S&W model 66. The K frame guns won't take the continuous pounding of full power loads like an L frame S&W or a Ruger GP 100 but mine has had a lot of pretty hot loads through it and it's a lot easier to carry in a holster all day.

I recently picked up a Colt Mark III 6" in 357. The trigger feels like it had a trigger job on it. Better than the other Mark III's that I have in 22. I venture to say that it feels as good as most Pythons that I have handled. The Mark III model was pretty much overshadowed by it's colt cousins at the time, but it is a fine revolver. It runs circles aroung my GP100 (3") in terms of accuracy and comfort to shoot in either single or double action.

Gotta say I am fond of the 2" and 3" K-frames from S&W.

September 7, 2005, 11:38 PM
S&W Model 19 4"

September 7, 2005, 11:43 PM
S&W all the way for me. I've several models including a Model 15, 66, 686 Plus and a recent addition of a 642 for pocket carry.

Not to mention a few others that fall out of the 38/357 catagory. Like 50 cal.

Smith & Wesson M28 is a favorite .357. Heavy, accurate and no nonsense.
Others are a 2.5 inch M19s and a short M66. I had the M19 worked on and it has a slick action.

An Old Model Ruger Blackhawk is also in the running for favorite.
It's the first .357 I bought. I had it out in the woods as "bear medicine" on a fishing trip a few weeks ago. It carried easily and worked as well as ever at keeping the bears away. ;)

September 8, 2005, 12:11 AM
After shooting several revolvers, I find that not many come close to my 2.5" Smith & Wesson Model 19

September 8, 2005, 12:27 AM
Ruger Blackhawk with 4 5/8" barrel.

My SP101 with Hogues is my fav

My sentiments exactly.... :) and what I carry on a daily basis.

September 8, 2005, 04:19 AM
Americans :D of course!

September 8, 2005, 05:11 AM
I have several Smith's but my favorite is my 2-1/2"-66. P&R'ed. :D

September 8, 2005, 05:13 AM
The .357 Mag is a cartridge I've never had much use for. It's bark is worse than it's bite, and there are other cartridges that do what it does better. The .32 Mag makes a better small game hunting round, the .44 Mag makes a better big game hunting round, and the .45 ACP is a better defensive round (and platform).

That said, I've managed to buy two .357 Smith's this year.
A very nice 6" Model 28-3 that I pretty much paid the going rate for.
And a real nice 4" Model 686 (no dash) that I walked out of Gander Mountain with for $230. :D
And I thoroughly enjoy shooting them both! :what:

September 8, 2005, 05:16 AM
For .38's, I have to mention the 10... even my snubbie 2" 10-11 just two years old. Wood stocks, of course.

For .357M's, I changed my earlier choice - a 6" 66-6 bought new two years ago - to last year's 5" half lug 686+, so called 'Stocking Dealer's Special'. Great look, balance, action, sights (HiViz & V-notch), and stocks (Ahrends cocobolo squared f-g) - for less than a standard full-lugged 4" 686, too!

4" Blued Colt Python with Badger Custom (Rosewood) Grips.

September 8, 2005, 08:45 AM
I have a M65-8, 3" that it a pleasure to shoot (my favorite). I keep the Pac grips on it for the range but also have the wood ones for show. I have a M60 in stainless that is my main carry gun but it tends to be more difficult to shoot.

I have a 3" S&W 13 that I have that is just about all I really need for a daily handgun.

These two make for just about the best CCWs around.

September 8, 2005, 10:17 AM
is the very first firearm I bought...a S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum ( K frame ) in a beautiful dark blue finish...sporting a 6 inch barrel, target trigger and sights with Galcano Alves ( spelling ? ) wood grips.
I also have a S&W Model 13-3 ( K frame ) nickel plated ( by original owner ) with a 3 inch heavy barrel and a Ruger Bisley Vaquero in stainless with a 5 1/2 inch barrel, as well as a 4 inch Ruger Security Six, also stainless. Gotta love a dual caliber firearm...

September 8, 2005, 10:24 AM
Smith & Wesson K frames. I have a model 15-3 which is the best revolver I have ever owner or shot.

September 8, 2005, 10:31 AM
This is a really tough question for me.

Over the years, I've owned, or still own, the following .357 Magnums

Dan Wesson 715-2 (Old Monson Mass. gun)
S&W 19-2 4"
S&W 19-4 2.5"
S&W 28-2

While I do enjoy the flexibility of changing barrels on the Dan Wesson, I have to say that the 28-2 is my favorite. It has probably the smoothest action on any revolver I've ever owned.

September 8, 2005, 10:55 AM
Well as I don't carry, all my wheelguns are range guns.

I've found I prefer S&W over all others thus far (always room for improvement though), and my current .38/.357 favorite is my Performace Center 627-5.

This one right here...

September 8, 2005, 10:59 AM
My S&W 686PP.

September 8, 2005, 11:48 AM
My favorite is a tuned SP-101 .357 I have with Hogue wood grips. It is a handy little devil.

Who makes your favorite .357/.38 revolver?
GP100 4" Blue
Old Model Blackhawk 4 5/8"

September 8, 2005, 12:37 PM
S&w 66.

September 8, 2005, 01:13 PM
Ruger- in SP-101, GP-100, or Blackhawk. I had a Redhawk .357 once but it was just too much gun for the cartridge.

September 8, 2005, 01:23 PM
First place: 6" Royal Blue Colt Python
Second Place: 4 inch skinny barrel S&W Model 10
Third Place: 3 inch S&W Model 65

September 8, 2005, 05:09 PM
How about my mod.13, 3'', magnaported, performance center, S&W?

September 8, 2005, 05:57 PM
Here's my girls....

September 8, 2005, 06:57 PM
Taurus in both cases.
Although, I have a Smith 28 that is pretty rad!!

September 8, 2005, 08:50 PM
Damn, there are so many!

Out of my .357's, the following four are my favorite:

I have a 4" Colt King Cobra in bright stainless that hangs out around the top of my .357 wheel gun list. I also have a 4" S&W model 13 that I am really, really fond of. I think the Model 60 S&W 357 is one of the best J-Frames around. But for a shooter, I have a 6" Ruger GP 100 in stainless that is without a doubt my most accurate and smooth shooting 357 Mag. It will also take the strongest loads when needed.

September 8, 2005, 09:14 PM
3" S&W 65-3,my daily carry piece
for the last 3 years. It's still
tight as a drum and very, very
accurate with the 140gr XTP's
from hornady.I've got a pair of
hogue rubber grips on it and it
fits my hand like a glove.

September 8, 2005, 09:16 PM
Dan Wesson -- Now owned by CZ.

September 8, 2005, 09:42 PM
Always something from smith or ruger, lately I have been liking these two, GP-100 and 640-1......tom

September 8, 2005, 09:48 PM
For 357 I like my Ruger Security Six but for CHL, I like my Smith and Wesson model 638 Airweight.

September 8, 2005, 09:58 PM
Currently my favorite is my M64-3. It is just as accurate for me as my M15-3. But, as others have stated, whichever one I am holding at the time.
It now has Houge Wood grips.

September 9, 2005, 05:41 AM

Favorite for carry: SP101 2" DAO.

Who makes your favorite .357 or .38 revolver?
If you take the question literally no one does.

My favorites aren't being made any more. :(

S&W used to make my favorites -- 4" Model 15 and 2" Model 10.

Colt used to make another favorite -- Python

Stainless revolvers are okay but my favorites are blued.

Colt Python and Colt Detective Special. I just love both of them.

September 9, 2005, 12:41 PM
My favorites (not necessarily in this order).

S&W M28
Colt Detective Special
S&W Model 10/M&P

Sharps Shooter
September 9, 2005, 02:47 PM
Nobody. My favorite .38/.357 is the Ruger Security Six, but they don't make it anymore.

September 9, 2005, 03:12 PM
I like Colts... though I don't own a Python I do have the 'elusive Magnum Carry' :neener:

What I'd REALLY like is a New Service in .357, now there is a belt gun!

Truthfully Ruger makes some really nice DA wheelguns... simple and rugged. A 4 Inch GP-100 is a really nice piece.

I've never owned a Smith and Wesson, but I always liked the Centennials and the Model 13 or 65 over the big 686 series. And the 38/44 just looks mean.

September 9, 2005, 04:09 PM
The S&W Model 27,recessed cyclinders,pinned 6 1/2" is my favorite. Byron

September 9, 2005, 05:23 PM
Mine are all oldies. Ruger Security Six blue 6", Ruger Speed Six stainless
2 3/4", Smith & Wesson K-38 Masterpiece, 8 3/8", Smith & Wesson Highway Partolman 4".

My all time favorite guns and calibers.

September 9, 2005, 06:33 PM
My favorite .357's are as pictured below:

September 9, 2005, 07:15 PM
Ruger GP100 SS, 6" barrel and the stock grips. :D

September 9, 2005, 07:33 PM
For 357 it would have to be my SP 101 2.25" w/ Meprolight Night sight, trigger job, no hammer and Pachmayr Compac grips. Loaded with W-W 145gr Silvertips.

38 goes to a last generation Colt Cobra loaded with 38SWCHPs+Ps and an Orange insert in front sight. No need for a trigger job; had one when it left the factory. :)

September 10, 2005, 10:12 AM
Smith & Wesson 27s, a 5" and 6"

September 10, 2005, 11:26 AM
S&W 686 with 4 position front sight. In fact, Im looking to buy one now. Please let me know if you have one with a 6" barrel you want to sell! Thanks-

Slick, Those are some slick revolvers! Nice photo's too.

As for me, I can't make up my mind so I have a M581, a M27-2, a Python, and am trying to re-acquire an OMBH I sold to a friend. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. I do prefer the medium frame size guns though, the M27 is a great range gun, but too much to carry on the hip.

I agree with Krazy Kramer. My favorite's are my Colt Python 6" blued and my Colt Dick Spl. 3rd generation. I also have a S&W Model 686, 4",Millet Red Dot, B-Square mounts, and Pachmyer finger groove grips. It is a joy to shoot and is insanely accurate.

Although I no longer have them any more, Ruger makes/made my favorite .357 revolvers. I've owned 3. A Police Service Six 4" barrel .357 that I carried when I worked as a security officer in Chicago. A Security Six 2 3/4" barrel .357 that I used a lot when I worked as a PI, and there was a 4" Security Six that I also used. And the ONLY .44 magnum I've ever owned, the Redhawk with 5.5" barrel was also made by Ruger.

Currently, the only .357 revovler I own is a Taurus Model 617B 7 shot .357 with a 2" barrel. So far it shoots pretty well for it's intended use, which is as a BUG to my Taurus PT92 or PT911.
