I've decided to replace the hammer spring in my 96 to lighten the trigger pull.

While the trigger on my pistol is not awful (I'm used to it), I've come to appreciate a lighter trigger thanks to now owning a couple of 1911s.

From searching previous threads, members here have used a "D" model spring.

What is the # rating for the factory D-spring? I was going to order a spring from Wolff and they offer 16-20# springs. Is there any reliability issues if I go with the lightest (16#) spring?

Suggestions?

Thanks!

The "D" is about 16#. There is always a possibility of a misfire when lightening the spring, but I haven't had any on mine (and I probably have at least 15k rounds fired on my D spring).

You can also cut about 2.5 coils off the stock spring and lighten it down that way.

Thanks bountyhunter, that's what I was wondering. I'll order the 16#.

I just finished replacing the stock hammer spring on my 96 with a Wolff 16#. Wow! Huge difference! It is a lot lighter now. I can't wait to take it to the range.
