Hi, Mete and Jaegermeister,

I am afraid the response by Jaegermeister refers to a much later company using the Massachusetts Arms Co. name rather than the one active in 1859. The original company was founded in 1851 (a couple of fellows named Smith and Wesson were on the board) and made Wesson and Leavitt percussion revolvers. They later made revolvers and the Greene carbine (not to be confused with the Greene bolt action underhammer rifle) using the Maynard tape primer. They made sporting rifles on the same system. I had not heard of a shotgun, but see no reason why there should not be one. I do suggest at least the possibility that the gun is a large bore (.54 caliber) carbine rather than a shotgun.

They also imported and sold the English Adams percussion revolver.

(FWIW, for those not familiar with the Maynard system, it was a percussion system using a conventional nipple, but in which the priming compound was fed to the nipple in a roll much like the rolls of toy caps for cap guns. When the hammer was cocked, a pawl fed the caps, one at a time, over the nipple, where the priming compound would be crushed and detonated by the falling hammer. If the special roll caps ran out, the shooter could use ordinary percussion caps. The Maynard primer was used on the U.S. Model 1855 rifle musket; it was dropped on the Model 1861, but the distinctive (humpback) hammer shape was retained until the Model 1863.)
