Just curious if any exist. Any particular models that stand out?

Hmmmm

The Bersa Mini-Firestorm .45 comes to mind, but it might be SA/DA. Not real familiar with Bersas, though.

Webley made a single stack .45ACP automatic patterned after their successful .32ACP auto.

They are very rare and quite a find.

If the 1911 grip feel overly large, you might try guns with finger grooves built into the grips. A friend of mine had that exact complaint about my 1911, and found a Bersa Mini-Firestorm (which is a DA/SA) very comfortable. The Bersa's grip really isn't any smaller, but the finger cuts made it more comfortable.

I mentioned "slim grip" to exclude the CZ97 which is double-action anyways... so I guess I didn't need to.

I'm curious if the 1911 has any direct competition from people who want a single-stack .45ACP with a light SA trigger.

The S&W M945 is one. It has the receiver similar to the 1911, and the top end of an S&W autoloader.

Taurus 945 might count ... DA/SA, not SAO

Same with the Sig P245.

Taurus 945. DA/SA or Cocked'n'Locked with its three-way frame mounted safety.

Grips are thinner than a 1911 but longer. Seemed like a great idea at the time but turns out that for me thinner and longer is worse than shorter and thicker (which is why I have such a like for double stack 45's like Para P14) when it comes to shooting, as it seems to want to twist in my hand under recoil. I'd probably shoot it a lot more if it was reliable with my 200gr lead SWC reloads. Basically a good gun that didn't quite work out for me.

I'd suggest trying a thinner 45 before spending a ton of money on one (another virtue of the Taurus -- pretty low price by 1911 standards).

The Bersa Thunder45 I saw seemed thicker in the grips than a 1911 and is DA/SA what looks like a 1911 style safety is really a decocker otherwise I'd have bought it (I gave up on DA/SA guns long ago).

What about the new Springfield compact 1911 pattern chambered for the .45 GAP ? It does have a smaller grip due to the shorter OAL of the .45 GAP.

SIG 220 .45 cal. Single stack mags. Slimmer than their 9mm double stack mag guns.

This is a great, non 1911, 45ACP.

I just got mine, have about 400 rounds through it, HydraShock and winchester white box wally-world ball. with zero feed or fire problems.

Only thing I did once is not seat the magazine completely, the mag retaining spring is a bit stiff but will probably be easier over time.

What really limits the choices is that you want a single action. Have you tried the variations possible with a 1911, like using slim grips and a short trigger? These help and could also be done on the above mentioned Springfield 1911 chambered for .45 GAP. Since the frame on the GAP pistol is already shorter in the grip from front to back, coupled with slim grips it should fit small hands really well.

I understand. I guess I'm surprised that, in production, only S&W has a single-stack .45ACP SAO... and even that is very 1911-like. Given the large amount of double-stack 9mm DA/SA variations, I can't believe the 1911 is basically the only gun of that spec. Few have tried to compete directly with it, instead releasing 1911 variations.

Put another way, if I say: steel, double-stack, 9mm; or 6-shot .357 4" wheelgun; etc... I can be talking about any number of guns. If I say: single-stack .45ACP SAO... 1911 is just about the only gun that can come to mind.

what about the SIG 210? Isn't it a SAO .45?

EDIT - Nevermind ... its a 9mm

The best mid-sized single action .45 EVER is the HK P9S-45 target with adjustable trigger and adjustable overtravel stop, which turns the pistol into SAO.
