I think I want a 44

I'll admit right up front that there probably no one on the planet more ignorant about Smiths and their history than yours truly.

I think I would like to get myself a 44 mag. Being somewhat of a purist, I still like blued steel. So I think that relegates me to the "used" category. It's not for CCW and most likely will just be used to knock over the occasional rogue bowling pin using 44 Special level ammo.

I was thinking a 25/625 in 45 ACP but I like the added versatility the 44 mag offers. Every once in awhile I trek northward to Alaska and there are critters there that bite. I know, I'm better off with a SS gun but we're back to that aesthetics thing. And in that vein, I think I prefer the 4" model over a 6" version.

So anyway, what is a good source to learn about the Model 29 and all its iterations?

Thanks,

Tim

IMHO the 6.5" M29-2 is the classic .44 Magnum. The other barrel lengths are OK, as are other models, but I still like the 6.5" 29-2. So sue me. :)

Yes, I'm biased. (http://www.fototime.com/CF026A0BAF2CB82/standard.jpg)

T-K'r,

A great and packable .44 Magnum is available again from S&W - the 4" 629 Mountain Gun. Get a set of the Hogue .500 Magnum style stocks, S&W # 29467 $35, and you can shoot any standard SAAMI spec'd .44 Magnums from it. I know you wanted a blued gun, but this one, at 39.5 oz, is easily stowed and quite practical. Another plus - you'll have the S&W lifetime warranty.

Disclaimer: I own a 629 and love it. I'd recommend it to anyone.

That said, my Taurus M-44 is my favorite handgun to shoot "for fun". It's also my hunting revolver. I picked it over the 629 because it came blued, and I didn't care for stainless for hunting. It's well-made, dead-on (killed a big buck at 55 yards with it last year) and a pleasure to shoot.

I carry a stainless pre-agreement Smith & Wesson .44 magnum; the .44s I care deeply about, however, are blued.
