Can someone tell me when Colt changed the barrel thread pattern on the Python? I am going to order a new barrel for mine and need to know which thread pattern to order. Mine was made in 1974 BTW. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My reference ("Pistolsmithing," by George C. Nonte, Jr. / Copyrighted 1974) says the thread is .553 x 32 TPI.

I'm sure a call to Colt's Customer Service Department could confirm if this is correct.

they did have two thread configurations for the Python. Would be just my luck that they changed in 74 and I would order the wrong one. I realize a call to Colt would answer the question, but being the lazy chunk that I was hoping someone could save me all the trouble of dialing the phone. I'll give a call though. Thanks for the response.

The easy way to ID Python threads is by the number of pins in the front sight.

When Colt made the thread change, they also changed the number of sight pins to ONE.

The old threads are .563-32, and the front sight has TWO pins.

The new threads are .562-36, with ONE pin in the sight.

I don't know when Colt changed them.
But I do know that Colt was still using the .563-32 thrrads as late as 1978.
I've never owned a Python made after that.

Should have been .563 instead of .553 ... :uhoh:

I'll take it out to the woodshed ...

I spoke with a Colt person about a year ago. She said the barrels were switched in 1991.
