Dunno if you intended this thread for just yours or what, but here's my SAR-1 as it was finished a couple years ago. It's since been refinished using BLO and a torch.

Whats with putting AKs on safe? I never remember that they are on until I want to fire the gun or rack the bolt. I find it much easier to work the bolt than find and move the safety lever. If I am storing it or transporting it, I just make sure the chamber is empty and that is it.

IMO the best way to transport is with the hammer forward (unloaded of course) and the safety on as it covers up the hole behind the bolt carrier.

someday I'd like to convert a saiga.

I'd be nice to have an AK made in russia.

Id like to have a suppressed 9x39 AK, but I will settle for a real krink. Unfortunately that is currently impossible.

I am currently researching a legal suppressor conversion for my Bulgie 7.62x39. I'll post pics if I ever make progress. it would involve going to Valmet/Galil front sights and would hopefully look like this:

MUCH better IMO. without the cheek lump, you can get your eyes right down by the sights very easily (as I guess a lot of us westerners have big heads- before I had trouble getting my face down low enough to the receiver to see through the sights). The RPK stock is about an inch shorter but because it cuts away at an angle, you barely notice.

Freedom Optics (http://www.freedomoptics.com/Comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=101)
Tantal (http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bstkobra.html)
Kalinka (http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/cgi-bin/kowstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=GSKEKP1S03)

All are about the same $185-$190. I got one in a group buy for $150, and the one I just bought was used for $135 shipped. They pop up fairly often on for sale boards at ak47.net and gunsnet.net if you feel like looking for awhile.

I haven't ever used one, but it always looks to me like the rear portion of the Kobra would really be irritating, a big bulky section preceding the optic. Does it get in the way at all? Or does adding a cheekrest become necessary?

pssst. hey kid, try a PK-AS, it's a lot better than the kobra</drug dealer>

The dot in the center lights up red. When you transition back to a well lit background, it is visible as black again. The black circle is always black.

I considered a PK-AS for the SAR-3, but to be honest its more than I wanted to spend, especially when I got the kobra for basically $125. Plus I already have a kobra for the AKS-74, so I might as well have the same thing on both.

I like the black dot thing, but i like that the kobra uses AAs. I also like that the pk-as doesnt block the irons, but i can get the kobra off my rifle in like 1.5 seconds if i really need iron sights in a hurry so its not a huge deal (not worth the extra at least IMO).

Looks like a cool sight though, and I might get one later when I have a bit more cash laying around.

Well you have to look over it to see the ret, so its not in the way. With both eyes open the ring and bottom just kind of disappears, so its very fast compared to the irons.

The line of sight is about an inch higher than the irons, but still leaves a decent cheekweld with a normal stock. It would be worse with a rommy folder, or something similar.

Cheekwelds and AK's just never get along well.

Beerslurpy..

Does the PK-AS require that you use your left eye or do you just got for more of a heads up system?

I like the idea of the dot a lot too.

beerslurpy
September 19, 2005, 10:23 PM
No, it is the same eye as before. You just cock your head a little bit to the right and you get a reticle superimposed over your field of view. If the sight gets damaged you lean a bit more for a cheek weld over the irons. It is exactly like an EOTech only with a little less head leaning.

Actually, I would say it is better than the EOTech because the reticle is finer and works without batteries and the unit costs half as much.

I've seen them for high 100s, low 200s. FreedomOptics sells them for about 215-220. I think mine was about 200 a while back.

There is a tritium powered east german one that sells for about 350, but I couldnt stomach the price.

TIMC: way cool pistol grip. Showoff!

I think I bought it from Tactical gears if I remember correctly. It is a very comfortable grip. The laser is the coolest part, it's a 12mw green laser. I can see it clearly in bright daylight out to about 40 yards and with a little cloud cover it can be easily seen out to 100 yards. At night it is super bright.

Cheekwelds and AK's just never get along well.

I solved this problem with the risor I added on th T-6 stock. It is secured with acraglass and gives me instant sight alignment with the holosight as soon as my cheek hits the stock. The risor is for a standard AR stock and was made by Choate. The T-6 AK stock is a lot bigger than the AR collapsable stocks so I couldn't use a risor made for a T-6 AR stock.

clange,

Is that an Arsenal, Inc. folding stock on yours? How do you like it? How does it compare to the ACE units?

Thanks

clange
September 26, 2005, 01:21 AM
Its actually a russian stock that was part of the kit (its a bulgarian rifle that was demilled, but they used some russian parts like stocks and trunnions). I'm pretty happy with it. It has a nice feel to it, very close to a normal buttstock.

ACE is probably a better way to go for a rifle that you already have. A new triangle stock like mine, with trunnion and hardware is probably $130+, and it requires a LOT of receiver work to add it.

If you're having a kit built up, its a nice option, but still pricey. When I had mine built it was $150 total difference. With todays prices it would a decent amount more, and I dont think I'd bother. Its almost always open anyway, since it cant fold when the kobra is mounted.

This is my first AK. I Really like it. I also have a kit I am going to build. Hopefully all goes well with the build. :) I hope my rifle looks and operates as good as everybody elses. I plan on treating the wood on the one in the pic here. I am also replacing the front handle grip with a black one.

This is my Saiga M3-EXP-01 (original Izhmash factory config, no conversion: I'm in Finland). I've fit in a bullet guide to allow for standard AK mags, the one in the pic is a Finnish Valmet/Exel prototype from a while back.

I just got the Simmons 1.5-5x on the BP-02 and have shot only two competitions (military reserves 3-gun) with it. It takes some getting used to next to the Kobra, which I do consider superb for anything up to about 100 meters and in low light.

ACE is probably a better way to go for a rifle that you already have. A new triangle stock like mine, with trunnion and hardware is probably $130+, and it requires a LOT of receiver work to add it.

It's not a lot of receiver work. You just have to hacksaw the protruding part of the rear tang off and Dremel it flat. The ACE receiver block fits right in and uses the remaining screw hole and the screw that attaches the pistol grip to keep it solid. Then the ACE Folding Stock Mechanism attaches directly to the receiver block and allows you to install any of their stocks to it. For me it wasn't the amount of work that had to be done but the fact that it requires permanent modification to your rifle and they don't even have the common sense to include instructions for installation. The hardest part for me was figuring out which peice did what and went where and that made me really nervous when I started into my rifle with a hacksaw. All of their stuff appears to be of the highest quality and I have no doubt that it is worth the money over the cheaper units, like the one sold in TAPCO, but I cringe when I think about how many rifles have been ruined because ACE doesn't, or at least didn't for me, include installation instructions with stocks that require permanent modification to the rifle :uhoh: :scrutiny:

I put a standard length folding Galil style ACE on my brother's WASR and a side-folding ACE 6-position M4-style stock on mine. Both lock up very solid and even if I have only had them since August my initial impression is that they are very durable and high quality. If you want a good folding stock for your AK, I fully recommend them. But make damn sure you know what you're doing before you take a saw to your rifle.

clange
September 28, 2005, 05:17 PM
You misunderstood me I guess. I said the triangle style folder like mine requires a lot of receiver work, hence why the ACE would be better for a gun thats already built.
