OK who here has a set of goggles for shooting and cleaning.

Do you use them often or do they just sit and collect dust? Another member thinks goggles have major dork factor. Your thoughts?

if you are talking about the Oakley goggles mentioned in an earlier thread, then i would have to agree about the dork factor. i wear glasses and have never found myself looking for more protection. if i am at an outdoor range during the day i wear my prescription sunglasses, indoor range i wear my regular specs.

you could always get something like this:

I've wanted them a couple of times out on the range in GWR.:D

Friend of mine cleans with them and respirator.

Goggles have Gun Dork written all over them. But if you actually have a legitimate need for them, they're pretty dang useful.

Gun Dork! I have a new phrase.:D

If you're on teh SWAT team and they are issued to you ....OK

Well if you're talking about the goggles I use for my chemistry class, well then, DORK!

SWAT goggles are another matter... :D

El Tejon, tell me more about GWR and the need for goggles...

It's mighty windy out here today, if I was shooting outdoors I'd probably wish I had a pair...hmmm. :scrutiny:

Beer goggles come in very handy, when you are hot but the babes are not.

Can be handy for prescription eyeglass wearers. Pickup up a set of "sport goggles" at wally world($32), add the cost of adding your prescription($20) and for a small amount of $ I have glasses I can shoot with with the frames being "pinched" by my peltor tac-6 muffs. If I ever catch a direct rico I have not damaged my everyday glasses. I walked into wally world with my current eyeglass prescription so I did not need or want an exam.:)

Googles are REALLY Dorky! About a month ago shooting in an indoor range with very narrow booths a .45 case got stuck between my
glasses and forehead by the eye. That was way to close for comfort and by the time I got it out of there It'd done a number on some soft flesh. Now use safet glasses with hz. shelf on top & at corners.

Non-shooting: I was using a portable belt sander on some wood. Even with my glasses, I got sawdust in my eyes. It does not happen when I remember to wear goggles.

Moral: Goggles have there place. You don't need them for most shooting. If you shoot a suppressed gun, especially a wet suppressor, goggles will help protect you from the blowback. They can be useful when cleaning if you use spray cleaners.

Goggles are dorky when you wear they and don't need them. They are handy when you need them. Get some, they're cheap.

I use a pair of chemistry lab googles in Airsoft skirmishes, and I'd say they're pretty dorky. But I'd sure rather look dorky than take an Airsoft pellet in the eye.

Ian, where's the tactical bagpipe?

Ian

Well, the pipes are definitely a weapon (having a dozen sword-wielding guys in kilts charge down a hill at you to the sound of a piper is a nerve-wracking experience, even when you know it's a staged fight). Mine even has a tactical black bag cover. They're better suited for fights not requiring stealth and sneaky movement, though. :)

My pipe teacher actually had plans drawn up for a set of pipes with a single-shot muzzleloader disguised as the bass drone. Unfortunately, I don't think he even got around to making up a prototype.

(this photo is several years old, from back when I had short hair, but its the only one I've got around)
