I guess all that gun control isn't working out for them like they'd hoped. :banghead:

According to the article you are 3 times more likely to be assaulted in Scotland that the U.S., with with England and Wales right behind Scotland:

All hooliganism? I suspect there's more to this.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

What an original idea! Beautiful in its simplicity!

Sounds like Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan has his arms around the source of the problem. It's a lucky thing they have somebody so bright on their side.

Celts have always had a propensity for violence. That's why Hadrian had to put up a wall.

They um... tried that.
Back in the 1700's, as I recall. You can see how well it worked. :)

:D
(For what it's worth, here in the hills of Tennessee, we're awful proud of our Scots heritage. As one gal says .. "Celtic.. bluegrass.. t'aint that different, just a different flavor of 'shine. )

Glasgow has had random stops and patdowns for weapons since I was there backpacking in '96. Too bad. I love the country and it's friendly people.

My guess is that in Scotland, as in the USA, the high violence rates occur in the crowded industrialized areas like Glasgow, and that the rural areas (still with less population than 200+ years ago) are quite "safe"

What a sad end for the country :( I would love to visit the land of my ancestors but for going through airport security and the stinking cities where the airports are :barf: .

Banning the claidheamh again ... shame on them! :fire:

Hah, it's so classic it's sad.

The attacks have been fuelled by a “booze and blades” culture in the west of Scotland...

Ah we've identified the "problem"...

David Ritchie, an accident and emergency consultant at Glasgow’s Victoria Infirmary, said that the figures were a national disgrace. “I am embarrassed as a Scot that we are seeing this level of violence. Politicians must do something about this problem. This is a serious public health issue. Violence is a cancer in this part of the world,” he said.

We've identified the wrong people to fix it...

And wait for it... wait for it...

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

We've identified the socialist authoritarian 'solution'!

The study, based on telephone interviews with victims of crime in 21 countries, found that more than 2,000 Scots were attacked every week, almost ten times the official police figures. They include non-sexual crimes of violence and serious assaults.

Look a the source(s) and look at the survey method........
1. Are there only 21 countries in the "developed" world? Me thinks not. Which 21 countries were used in the survey? The World Bank recognizes 29 countries as developed. England, Wales and Scotland are considered one "developed" country.

2. Interviews were conducted with crime victims. How were these victims identified? If your country doesn't consider battery a crime, then there is no victim to interview and fewer victims to boot. A felony can be turned into a misdeamor, police can fail to respond to reported crime, prosecutors can refuse to file charges. No convictions, No Crime. Where does Scotland stand compared to everyone else?

3. The source.....The UN, if there not busy taking a crap on the USA the next best target is our Axis of Evil ally, the United Kingdom. I wouldn't wipe my butt with a UN report, if all it stated was that the sky was blue. They omitted at least 10 Nations that they recognize as "developed" to publish this drivel. What else was left out or doctored up.
The Times, we don't believe anything else they publish, why should we believe this?
