art's grammaw will have a fit if she sees you watching a video involving a deer in a dress.

Deer are put together the same as most mammals, practice on rabbits, squirrels, ect.

The most important thing is that you DO NOT let the bullet go thru any part of the abdominal cavity when you shoot the animal.

If you shoot the animal in the heart/lungs (chest cavity, ABOVE the diaphram) field dressing is clean and easy.

If the animal is "gutshot" your job is a mess.

Thanks, but I would still like to know if anyone can recommend a good video on field dressing a deer.

I assume there is something out there - I know I've seen them advertised before - I just for the life of me can't find one.

Just be careful that you don't go with the same butcher techniques that you would use for beef. Deer are different. They will taste better if you remove as much of the fat/tallow as possible as well as the bones. Many processors will just cut them up like a cow -only smaller- and put out videos showing this process. I have read some books that describe and illustrate the process very well but have only seen a couple videos and they were just put out by processors who didn't trim that much of the fat off or remove bones.

With a nod to Art's grammaw and her affinity for dresses, I really think deer look better in polyester pants suits. Something about those hairy chests. :D

First time I killed a deer, I was pretty much on my own for information. I had found a two-page field dressing guide in a book on deer hunting, and so I xeroxed those pages, laminated them, and stuck them in my hunting pack.

Shot my first one, a smallish 6-point, while hunting alone with a muzzleloader. I climbed down from stand, unsheathed my knife, and started in step-by-step. I know I had to look a little silly out there... look at directions, make cut, look back at directions, make another cut, etc., etc. Sort of like I was following a new recipe. :p
