Woman Calls 911 Before She Is Killed

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Police say an 18-year-old Broward County woman used her cell phone to call 911 for help Monday night, but by the time officers arrived, she had been killed.

Sunrise police said when officer arrived at the apartment building at 5990 N.W. 19th St. just after midnight, Christine Myers was lying dead in a hallway.

Police arrested up 26-year-old Edward Mosie Howard on Tuesday.

Investigators said Myers and Howard knew each other, but investigators said they don't know a motive for the killing.

Howard made his first court appearance Wednesday. He is being held without bond on murder and sexual assault charges. Police said he also has a no-bond hold for a probation violation.

Police have not said how Myers was killed.

I have worked as a dispatcher/emergency communications/911 operator and you cannot believe how quickly somebody can kick in your door, kill your dog and take you out. Those are the people that all that would go through my mind was you had enough time to dial 911 you would have had enough time to shoot the SOB, have a cigarette to calm down and then call us.

This is the reason I am an advocate of keeping a firearm within arms reach in your home. I know for a fact how fast things can transpire.

I'm thinking calling 870 would work just as well. They both tend to make sure the caller is able to dial 911 later.....

Of course, since the "suspect" was apprehended, and will be held accountable (for at least a few years) all's well that ends well in the eyes of the gun-grabbers.

dialing 911 is a waste of time, I say beretta 92FS. Then let the neighbors call 911 because they heard shott fired...20 mins later when the cops come they are going to find dead men tell no tales and me still pulling the triger, hell I can't remember anything, I must have blacked out...

While I'll definatly agree with dialing 1911, I would first use a .308 (Better stopping power)

The generate revenue for the gov. agency (city, county, state) they work for and do paperwork, after the fact, when someone screws up.

Have a good friend, and happily good neighbor who is a police officer with over 20 years on the job, now mostly trains new patrol officers.

His statement on the function of the police: "We are criminal historians. We write the after action reports when a crime is committed, 90% of the time, and then build "incident diaries" as new information becomes available about the original crime, through investigation, arrest, prosecution and, sometimes incarceration. The average officer will never in his career arrive at a crime scene while anything of any importance is still going on. Only the very unlucky officer gets to a crime scene in time to be fired upon, unless his duty assignment has to do with crowd or riot control."

This officer's biggest action of his career, so far, took place at his own house, in his own bedroom, when a gang of burglars failed to understand that he was working the night shift on the afternoon they broke into his house to haul away the furiture, and etc.

Yep, you guessed it, no 911 call until after all the gunsmoke cleared away so the incoming officers could get a correct body count.

Moral of the story, never wake up a sleeping peace officer who is both a Vietnam era Vet and also a firearms and tactics instructor, unless you REALLY want to see what a body bag looks like from the inside. :eek:

Oh, for those into the details, my pal always did and still does keep an issue Mossy 500 as the GoTo Gun in the bedroom, and the final score that afternoon was Mossy two, bad guys a big ZERO. And the after action report likely ran to 1/2 a line in a pocket notebook. :neener:

Not to sound like a prude but that's not very clever...you should always be armed...even in the bathroom, we have all seen those movies where someone gets the hachet in the bathroom...
Beside the bed is a mossburge 500, on the left side of the bed is a HK usp .45 on the right side is my Beretta 92SF. (was ruger P94 but it got replace this weekend, I am proud of my OD beretta can you guys tell?) did I mention extra maggs loaded for both pistols and extra rounds to the mossburge under the bed. In the living room is a 1/2 ton safe so God help the idiot who breakes in our home.. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: not to be prepared is just asking for it...

this morning are carrying a story relating that all 911 service on Oahu was down for 13 minutes yesterday morning.

Thirteen minutes seems like a long time to have someone beat on your head with a claw hammer (well, 13 minutes plus the normal response time).

I have 2 kids "running" around my house, I once was a kid "running" around a house that was wall to wall with loaded and ready to go guns all over the house.
(Most of the gus are in the safe in my hom now) That is why is it VERY important to TEACH children how to properly handle guns in a safe manner and it's also important that the "children" know just what a gun can do and what it purpose it for. I know I might get flamed for posting that but this is comeing from a person that has been around this her whole life. My dad had me shoot by the age of 4. I always got o hold and touch what I wanted but he made it very clear to me it was NOT a TOY and it could KILL me if not handled safely. I could operate and gun in our house efficently by the age of 6.

Parents do your job and htere is NOT a problem.

to adress what is comeing next; other kids visiting your home, Watch them and make sure tehy don't do into room with "lose" guns. or if you feel more comfortable Lock them but always keep a side arm ready folks you just never know....

Yeah, another bad case and innocent life lost. Even dialing steel bar or a bat would be more effective than the cell phone (also it helps to learn to throw the damned thing accurately (afterthough - today's cells are too small and light to make any damage, but a full kilo/2 pounds of 10 year old brick - now we're talking about :what: :evil: )- distraction while you grab the serious piece of hardware). Anyway it is very useful to have someting to enforce the safety of my castle - a FN FiveseveN at my case @20+1 rounds, so you WILL be able to call the 911 at all :uhoh: . Yeah, surely dead mane tell no tales, so always 2 in the chest and 1 in the head and after that also a warning shot (to do things properly - later it would be impossible to tell what shot was when fired..). one LEO told me that better the lawyer with dead client than with wounded one.

EDIT: two thumbs up on the education of kids relating the firearm toting around.

Now the sad thing is she couldn't have been legally carrying if she wanted to. I wonder what a judge would say if she had been, and she would have killed the guy.

While it may be true that one has young children running around in your house, it is perfectly leagal in most states to carry in your house even w/o a permit.

Ya know how they have that charity plan to donate old cell phones for domestic abuse victims to make emergency calls with? Anybody wants to donate a 1911 phone, I'll happily accept.

But hey, I can dial *40 with my Steyr, and it probably goes the same place. Only other option I have is calling *22, and I'd probably have to call a bunch of times before I got through to someone. ;)

Here in Nashville the police want us todial "911" if its life or death...or dial 862-8600...if it's "urgency without emergency". So I say shoot first then dial the "other" number...after all...the emergency part would be over. In other words, let 'em bleed a bit. :D
