Anybody bought a CMP Garand recently? They seem to be down to the last few rifles, and I'm concerned that all they have left are the dregs.

So, if anybody has ordered a rifle from them recently, can you tell me what you thought of the rifle they gave you?

I just recently this summer bought a Field Grade SA, and it is beautiful. BTW, they SAY that they have 3+ years of Garands left!

The idea that CMP is down to the dregs of the selection is patently false. The real answer is that CMP has *no idea* of what they have left. If you look in the warehouse at Anniston there are crates and crates of Garands, and Orest and company don't know what's in them until they open them up and see.

Grades and availability fluctuate depending on what they uncover as orders come and go and crates are opened.

Yes, there is a finite supply, and eventually that will dry up. According to Orest just a few months ago on the CMP website he claimed they have about a 5 year supply. Of course, that also doesn't consider the possibility that other supplies of lend/lease rifles might be returned and made available by the CMP. It's just not possible to really predict what might happen over the next couple years. Might be feast, might be famine.

I ordered a rack grade USGI SA two weeks ago (just before the price increase) and I got a very nice 5.9 million in a matching walnut stock set. Well worth every penny.

I have purchased 2 this year, both were as advertised. Better than I had any right to expect.

Who buys a 50+ year old used military rifle and expects perfection?

I'm not expecting perfection, just trying to be realistic.

They used to offer a selection of manufacturers (I planned on buying HR) in each of the grades. Now all they have is SA, and the don't have any USGI rifles in Service grade. I wondered if that meant they were down to their last few rifles, in the grades and manufacturers that were the least popular.

I bought my 03A3 from them a 2 or 3 years ago. At the time, they said they only had a couple of years worth of Garands left. Since it's been a couple of years since they told me that, I figured the limited selection was a result of them running out of inventory

It was an honest question, not meant to disparage the CMP or the rifles they sell. I asked because I didn't know. Not trying to spread false info.

I recently (about a month and a half ago) ordered and received a Greek SA Service Grade, and it's in remarkably good condition. Obviously none of the parts really match with each other, but metal looks almost virgin, the wood parts match, and it looks like a M1 should look.

Headless, you in Indiana? Sounds like you need a road trip to Camp Perry. Pick one off the racks. (and visit the collector-grade wallet-busters)

I've been toying with that idea. Camp Perry is only about 4 hours from here.

I figure the gas would cost about $50 or $60. Shipping is only $23 per rifle, so I'd hafta buy two or three rifles to break even. :evil:

Forget breaking even. At Camp Perry, you have to pay the 7% Ohio sales tax, so you don't make your shipping costs back.

Just call first, so you know they're open and stocked.

Go to the store. It is an enjoyable trip for me, I live about 4 hours from it.

The guns are not necessarialy in any better or worse condition. They don't have every last one graded. There were plenty of good ones, and plenty of bad ones left.

I just got back from Camp Perry with a (soon to be) beautiful M1. The folks there were really great. I told them what I was looking for, and they helped me find the perfect rifle. I also picked up a case of Greek surplus ammo.

I can't wait to go to the range and see how she shoots.

I'm still waiting for my :cuss: C&R License. 10 :cuss: weeks and still waiting. I called them at the 8 week mark and all I was told that is was being procesed and it could be up to 45 more days :banghead: As soon as I get it I plan on getting my first Garand

I got my Garands the other day. A lot better than I expected. Me and my father ordered one with stock and 3 less wood, thinking we would use those 3 for projects. One of the rifles without the wood was all matching. It was made in 53 has 53 barrel and all the right numbers except for a bmp rear sight, The others where made in 41 May, 41 June, and 44 June. The one with wood came with a danish stock. Not the nicest but servicable. The best thing is it shoots like a champ.I would recommend the CMP to any one.

TimH dont wait to get your garand you can go throught the CMP and have it mailed to your house direct with out going through a dealer or having a C&R. Just do all the paper work send it in. Took me 2 1/2 weeks from the time I sent it in till I recieved it.

You don't need a C&R to obtain a firearm from the CMP. A C&R can be used to satisfy the "Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity", but there are other ways to satisfy that requirement.

Satisfying the Markmanship requirement is my biggest problem. I joined the nearest CMP affiliated range this past July. I figured I would go there have the range master watch me shoot and be done with. I haven't been able to get there to shoot :rolleyes: Too much work ( I'm self-employed so I work when there is work ) So I decided to get my C&R to avoid the markmanship requirement. In hindsight I should have taken time to go to the range. I figure the C&R license can't be THAT far off now....I hope. That said I've been wanting a Garand since I watched Band of Brothers. Almost bought one over the summer from the local want ad but could'nt see paying a$750 for a gun the guy probably got from CMP in the first place for $400.

I ordered a Greek HRA service grade M1 earlier this year. It is a fine rifle.

My concealed handgun license satisfied my marksmanship requirement. Almost any pistol or gun training involving range time is accepted.
