I ran into a problem yesterday. I bought a long gun from a private party on the
internet. He wanted my dealers FFL so he could send the gun to me thru the
post office. When I went to my dealer to get a copy of his FFL he told me that
he would only give his FFL to another FFL. He told me that the guy I bought
the gun from didn't need my dealers FFL to send the gun to him. My question
is if the private party does not have my dealers FFL how does he prove to the
post office who he is sending the gun to ?

I have never had the Post Office ask or care who I sent long guns to.

I have sent long guns to both gunsmiths and manufacturers for repairs and never had anyone ask.

Is this person in the same state as you?

Different state. Did you tell the post office that you were sending a gun? If
not that may be why they didn't ask.

This might help. I ship mostly UPS and not the PO.

If I ship to an FFL with a business then I have never had a problem having to show their FFL. I do if I am shipping to a residential address such as a C&R holder. Why the difference, I don't know. Just to make them happy I guess.

He wanted my dealers FFL so he could send the gun to me thru the post office. That is the right way.

... He told me that the guy I bought the gun from didn't need my dealers FFL to send the gun to him. Seller must have copy of FFL, to keep BATF happy Find different local FFL who knows the rules.

... how does he prove to the post office who he is sending the gun to ? USPS shouldn't care.

Sure I tell USPS I'm shipping a gun. Guess what, they still don't care who you are sending it to.

If you violate the law it's on your ass, not theirs. It's not the Post Offices' job to moniter firearms transactions, and I've never had a problem shipping long guns, certainly never been asked to see an FFL.

Your dealer is correct. A private party does not need a copy of the dealer's FFL in order to ship him a firearm. Nor does the post office need to see a copy of an FFL to ship a firearm. The seller can use EZ Check to verify that your guy is legit.

That's right. https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck

Also have the guy send a scan of his picture ID and a signed receipt for the firearm so your FFL has accurate information for his bound book.

Still need the FFL number to use it.

The first three and the last five numbers. If your FFL won't give him that then find someone else to do your transfers. If he is over $15 he is too much anyway.
