I'm thinking about heading to NOLA to get in on the reconstruction of the state. Welders don't seem to be as prevalent down there as they do up north, and working outside during their 'winter' won't bother me in the least.
I could prolly make some REALLY good money down there...

what do you guys think? Am I just being an idiot? Should I leave most of my firearms behind (I thought I would just bring my CETME, as it is a pretty good amount of firepower and I wouldnt mind if I lost it..)

Probably find a good bit of work.

I think I'd want either a van or a pickup with a camper shell as my vehicle. I'd set up to be self-sufficient, if you're talking about heading out within the next two or three weeks. Camping gear, food and water. No big deal; stores will be open around Baton Rouge and generally north of I-12...

Guns? I'd probably take a good handgun, nothing high-dollar, but I wouldn't bother with any rifle or shotgun. Louisiana recognizes many other states' CHLs, and by and large the cops don't bother working folks.

Don't leave anything in your camper you don't want stolen...unless you can find a guarded place to park it.

And, you are more likely to need a handgun than a rifle.

So establish residency there and get an LA permit or just carry it in the car. Or get a non-resident FL permit or something (which they will recognize in LA).

Packing.org sez:
A user called the Louisiana State Police and was told state law considers your car an extension of the home, similar to Florida with their glove box law. Carrying a loaded gun in the car is an accepted practice there.

In an email from the Louisiana State Police I was told that Louisiana has no law coving firearms inside motor vehicles. Since there is no law anyone who can legally possess a firearm can carry a loaded firearm inside a vehicle. It can be the glove box, console or under the seat. Even without any laws covering firearms inside vehicles I would still be very careful without a Louisiana CCW or one they honor from another state.

And NOLA will not have special laws....
§1796. Preemption of state law

No governing authority of a political subdivision shall enact after July 15, 1985, any ordinance or regulation more restrictive than state law concerning in any way the sale, purchase, possession, ownership, transfer, transportation, license, or registration of firearms, ammunition, or components of firearms or ammunition; provided, however, that this Section shall not apply to the levy and collection of sales and use taxes, license fees and taxes and permit fees, nor shall it affect the authority of political subdivisions to prohibit the possession of a weapon or firearm in certain commercial establishments and public buildings.

Get a New Hampshire CHL. Should take about a week.
