I bought a Browning Gold Hunter 20 ga for my son when he was 6 weeks old. I HAD to test it out, and I do so quite a few times a year. My son is 6 now, in a couple years I'll have to find one of my own..........

all my kids get bb-pellet guns when they are 6 or 7 a .22 single shot when they are 10 and a rifle at 16, all the shooting is closly supervised of course. :D

I don't have any kids of my own yet, but when I do, I will handle the gun/shooting situation like my dad did with me. I went hunting with him at age 5 to get the experience, by 6 I was shooting my Marlin 60 .22. From 6-10 I got to be a darn good shot and by the time I was old enough to start deer hunting, I had my own deer rifle. Dad knew I was a hunter for life from childhood, so he didn't give me some crap rifle to start with. I am still using that rifle. Thanks Dad! The .22 is a great place to start. If they are old enough to start school, they are old enough to shoot, the way I figure.

Both our boys each got a Chipmunk .22 when they were born and were shooting them once a week or so when they were 4.

I have three boys, all of them started shooting when they were around 4 with .22's, each child is different but with close supervision mine moved on to .22 autos and centerfire pistols by the time they were 7.

I bought my daughter a Cricket rifle (.22) and a Heritage Arms Rough Rider (also .22) when she was 6. She is now 8 and is very disciplined when it comes to handling guns. We both enjoy our time on the range very much.

I've kind of spoiled my daughter last year when she was 6 with a .22 dedicated upper on a preban AR with collapsable stock so she can shorten it for her reach. It'll be really cute in pink camo with the little hearts when Dan finishes with the duracoat and she'll have a gun she can put different uppers on (just like her dolls). :evil:

I never bought a firearm for my daughter. My grand daughters first gun was a Chipmunk .22 from her other grand father at 5. Followed up by me buying her a stainless Bearcat(I had it engraved) . She has 11 more now, all bought buy me. She is 11, and some, she hasn't shot yet, but she will! I let her pick any 4 from my collection when she was 10. She selected a Ruger 50th Anniversary MK11, a Hi-cap S&W 9mm( I believe it is a 469 or 649(?), anyway it is a 12 shot compact), a Ruger bull barrel Government Target, and a Colt stainless 45acp. She loves plinking, almost as much as horses!!!

My uncle, who is a former SWAT sharpshooter, as well as former Captain of Security at Virginia Tech, taught me how to shoot at a pretty early age...I think I was around 8 years old. Sadly I can't remember how old I was, because shooting wasn't exactly my thing at the time...but now I'm hooked on it. Anyhow, the first gun I ever had was a Daisy air rifle of some sort -- My dad bought one as an anti-squirrel rifle, and I ended up hijacking it so that it became mine. I'm now the local squirrel exterminator. Last year, at the age of 15, I had a Mossberg 195K-A bolt action 12 guage handed down to me. It was my bestfriend's grandfather's. His dad wasn't exactly big on his son having any guns, so he gave it to my father instead. It was in pretty bad condition...Rusty, stock dried up, and so on. For some reason, I became obsessed with the thing. For a long time, I bugged my dad to get it out so the two of us could clean it. This went on for the latter part of the year. I finally got fed up and got the thing out on my own, figured out how to disassemble it, and cleaned it up myself. My dad was pretty impressed with what I did, so he decided to let it be mine. My first 'real' gun. Most recently, for my 16th birthday (September 12), I recieved a Yugo M-48 from Mitchell's. I was quite impressed with it, and I find the quality to be worth the extra dollar, but we're all entitled to our opinions ;). This was my first gun that had an affair with cosmoline earlier in its life. That was...er '"fun". Now she's all cleaned up and looking pretty, and ready for the range. I've got 80 rounds of 8mm to burn through, so I'm excited. :D Next on the list is either a Mosin Nagant M38, or an SKS (M59/66). Whatever I decide to get, I'll be buying it in November :D I wouldn't mind your suggestions on what I should go with, either.

I don't have any rugrats myself, but as for me...

I started out on grandad's old .22 revolver (dunno who made it) at five-ish. I moved up to a pellet gun of my own at 8. Archery was more interesting to me than firearms at the time, so grandma got me a 25# compound bow at 9. Dad gave me a Marlin model 39TDS at 12, and a family friend gave me a Mossy 500 12Ga. at 13.

I plan to go the "day you were born" route with a rifle like mine (model 39s are becoming a tradition in my family) with my kids, and move up to a single-shot .410 as soon as they can hold it.

the day my oldest daughter was born, i bought her a colt 1911 in 45. at 5 i bought her a nef 22lr (and am still teaching her to shoot it), and at 6 she got an ar-15 - which she tried to shoot, but we need more time on the 22. she hasn't shot the 1911, yet.

the day my youngest daughter was born, i got her a remington 700 bdl in 22-250. she just turned 2, so that's all she has, for now. her great uncle tried to give her a ruger 77 in 204 ruger today, but i told him no... she hasn't fired anything (even a bb gun), yet.

The one thing im noticing is the age range. I agree big time on teaching young. 5,6,and 7 seem to be the commen age range which i definitly like to see. I think kids are pretty receptive at that age. I would like to believe i was to but thats for my dad to judge. ;)

I did it and my kids benefited from it. :)

They were shooting my MP5 by the time they were 5 and moved up to the MAC by around 7 or so. It did totally ruin TV and movie gunfights for them by doing it though. :)

I inherited a Stevens Marksman .22 from my Grandfather in 1995. Okay, Mom said "Take the ones you want." I grabbed this one expressly for the purpose of handing it on to my son when he was old enough. He was born in 2001. He'll probably get it in the next couple years.

Next was a Ruger 10-22. Cut the stock down and swapped out the trigger for an adjustable model. Painted the stock bright pink w/ black tiger stripes. :what:

My daughter was about -6 months when I bought her a Remington 514 and a 50's vintage Red Ryder. She's 11 months now and now has a 28ga 870 with 2 stocks and 4 barrels. She'll get a NEF single shot rifle this fall and maybe a handgun in a couple years.
