just bought a box of XTP/HP 230gr, .45acp bullets and noticed that the hollow point is deeper into the bullet . is hornaday changing there designs in all of there XTP/HP bullet line or did they only have done it with these ?? the material is is thinner around the tip of the opening also I am wondering if the hole is going to collapse on the feed ramps . like the winchester silvertips

I haven't seen the new XTPs you describe.

I'd tend to doubt that they'll deform as readily as the Win ST bullets. The latter were designed for anti-personnel use, and the aluminum jacket IS indeed a bit thin. The XTP bullets, on the other hand, are quite popular for hunting use, and their gilding metal jackets seem a lot sturdier.

Obviously, the new ones will have to be tested. Please let us know what you learn.

Best,
Johnny

Hello. After reading the gentleman's post on the larger hollow point in the 230 gr Hornady .45 XTPs, I remembered that I, too, had recently purchased a box.

He's right.

As best as I could measure, the "old" XTP on the left is 0.21" wide and 0.131" deep. The "new" XTP is the same width, but a noticable 0.179" deep.

Notice also that the bottom of the cavity on the "new" bullet is not as wide as on the "old."

I will venture a guess as to why. A while back, Hornady began offering "police type" ammunition for sale under the name "TAP" or "CQB" (cannot remember which is correct) and I'd emailed them as to whether or not the 9mm ammunition used the standard XTP bullet and was told that it did. I was also told that some "other calibers" had been "tweaked" for better performance. I'm guessing that this is the "tweaking." In some testing at www.ammolab.com , the Hornady round in this weight did not always show optimal expansion through the 4 layers of denim thing and perhaps Hornady's fixed that now? I don't know, but it seems logical.

Got many "ballistic irons" in the fire right now, but will get around to loading these up to known performance levels for the old XTP in this weight and report back. It might be a little while, though.

I don't think this bullet will collapse on the feedramp assuming the magazine's feeding properly, but certainly cannot say for sure without checking.

I have noticed over the years (I'm now 16) that manufacturers will change bullet construction yet maintain the same version identification.

Gotta look close sometimes.......

Stephen: We'll look forward to your test results, amigo.

I thought Weshoot2's birthday was on Feb. 29 :p

My lot 00-61 has the deep hollow points. Looks like they've made them that way since 2000.

Bye
