What rifle should I get next?

March 28, 2003, 05:34 PM
I've decided I need another .30 caliber rifle. I'm undecided on which one I want.

I love the FAL design, and another one of those (like a carbine) wouldn't hurt. But I don't have any especial need for a carbine; I prefer the extra muzzle velocity, usually.

I'm trying to decide between a Springfield M1A and an Orion 7 M1 Garand. The two are, obviously, very similar. I don't know which to get, though.

I hear of problems with recent production Springfields. Parts breakage and such.

Any thoughts?

I've been jonesing for a garand for awhile now and the Orion 7s look really nice.

If you were in ********** I'd say the garand is a no brainer becasue the Kali version of the M1A looks weird with that muzzle break thingy hanging off it. Plus you would be stuck with 10 rnd mags.

Aw heck, get the Orion garand then come back and tell me how cool it is so it'll convince me to get one too. :D

I'd build an M1A clone up off an armscor receiver, put a camo fiberglass stock, douglas barrel, GI parts.
It would make a great battle rifle.

If I didn't already have a M1A , I'd go out and buy one . I might just buy another anyway ! Got the Garand already to compare it to and I like the Garand ....but the M1A excites me !!
Hard to go wrong either way you go on this one , just depends what you want out of a thirty caliber rifle .

IF you could get a decent M1D it might be worth putting up with the expense of an '06. Otherwise the the 308 rifle is going to be the winner if for no other reason that there is more ammo floating around, and more variety and it's cheaper than the '06.
Plus the M1A is a shooter.
But that's JMHO.

Plus the M1A is a shooter.

I don't understand. The M1 Garand is not a shooter? It's not like I'd be getting some collector's piece; Orion 7 rifles are rebuilt and are as close to a brand new Garand as you can get while having an original receiver. But the barrel and many other parts are new, there's no collector value.

Have you seen a Select grade Orion M1 in person yet? They are absolutely gorgeous, I wouldn't think twice about getting an Orion 7 Garand over a new M1A.

And, the M1A is a shooter too, just like the M1D:p :p

(Both are great rifles. I would just rather have something that shoots 308)

I envy you you hard decision. There is no wrong answer:D
Take care,

I had the same dilema as you recently. I ended up getting the select grade from Orion after playing with both (I live about 20 minutes from Orion's shop). It just seemed like I was getting my moneys worth out of the Garand.....it felt more expensive than the Springfield. And it shoots like a dream....I have not done any serious accuracy testing yet but Tony says it will do under 2 MOA very conservatively. I will say that Tony Pucci is also a pleasure to deal with....I spent a good hour there talking to hiim about the gun and he was incredibly helpful. I will probably end up getting an M1A down the line anyway but if I could only choose one it would be my select grade. The pictures don't do the rifle justice but here they are anyway:

P.S.- I also recently was able to check out one of Springfield Armory's new Garands and wasn't impressed at all. The Orion is a MUCH nicer gun.

Good Luck.
