Going to shoot bowling pins again. This time we are using .22lr. Thus, name the top three ammo products that give the most energy (foot pounds).
This is a handgun competition.

CCI Stinger Probably--make sure it cycles well in your .22 if it's semi-auto; sometimes it doesnt.

CCI blazer seemed pretty strong when i used it.

If you're pin shooting, momentum (mass times velocity) may be more important than energy (0.5 times mass times velocity squared) since even though it is energy that damages the pins, it is momentum that knocks them off the table.

If you can find the specs on different brands of ammo, you can multiply the bullet weight (in grains is OK) times the velocity in fps, and then compare that number between brands. Highest number that functions reliably in your gun, wins.

The Aguila "SubSonic Sniper" 60-grain .22LR might come out on top of the momentum heap, but accuracy might not be so great if your barrel doesn't have a fast enough twist rate to stabilize the longer bullet.

+1 for CCI Stingers. I'd say they will win hands down.

CCI Velocitors. Published velocity of 1430 fps with a 40 gr bullet. CCI claims it has 30% more whomp than any other .22 lr loading.
I put two pit bulls and a handful of other dogs out of my misery with them. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on coyotes out to about 50 yrds.

I never have shot pins but I think Ben might be right on this and you will want a heavier bullet high in momentum in stead of a light high vel round.
I have read pistol shooters tend to use flat point loads with heavy bullets to give good transfer of energy to the pin and still need solid hits to knock them off the bench.
What loads are the guys that have shot this before useing??

CCI Velocitors, the heavier bullet holds its energy better.

Thanks for the input.
Last night the others appeared to be using CCI Mini Mags. Energy was plenty. I would prefer a flat head though.

Just my .02 but velocitors void the warranty on many rifles. The Aguila's don't weigh so much as to preclude their use for accurate shooting. I find that they shoot considerably better out of handguns than rifles. They hit with considerable authority and the brass ejects without much struggle. Perhaps due to the fact that the brass on them is shorter to begin with.

What rifles do velocitors void the warranty on?

Aguila "super maximum":

1700 fps from a rifle
1350 fps from a pistol

my 10/22 manual says to not shoot stingers or velocitors out of it. They seem to work just fine, so i'm not sure why they would say that in the manual.. :scrutiny: Maybe if I put 5000 rnds of velocitors through it it might cause some damage at the throat ?

Any .22 that is accurate in your pistol will do. Pins don't need to be knocked off the table in a .22 pin shoot.

I'm also curious to know. Would you have a link by any chance? I've got two boxes lying around that I haven't yet tried. If this is true, I'll prolly toss them.

I think the reason that Ruger does not want Velocitors used is because the bolt on the 10/22 might be too light for them. Once would have to increase the mass of the bolt to take the higher energy round. That and the bolt hitting the bolt retaining pin harder, with the Velocitors, and thus trashing the reciever. I'm getting a bolt retaining pin buffer so that part won't affact me.

The reason Ruger doesn`t recommend CCI mini mags and some of the other High vel rounds is the cases are longer then std 22 LR brass, or so I`ve been told. I`ve have measured a few rounds and the brass is longer. How they fit in the chamber though, I`m not sure and the problem might be more with match type chambers and not everyday factory chamberings. I just don`t really know. At any rate if the manufacture doesn`t recommend shooting them or if you`ve a "match" chambered gun I`d stay away from them just to be safe.

Again, this is what I`ve been told / read is the reason. I haven`t called Ruger or any other manufacture to verify it.
