Is this legal as I have a concealed weapons permit? The pamplet that came with the permit said something to the effect of "the licensed person may carry a loaded weapon on or about the person" or words to that effect. But it doesn't specify handgun or rifle. I would think if I can carry a loaded handgun concealed on my person then why not my m1 carbine in my car on the seat under a jacket or something.

I routinely transport my ak to the range in a rifle case with a loaded mag in place not chambered with a round though. I also keep a few other loaded mags in the case also to save me time at the range i sure hope I am not breaking the law without knowing it? So am I ok here guys and can anyone tell me if it is legal to keep a loaded long gun in a car in florida? Thanks

If no one gives an answer, I would write your Attorney General for Florida.

I know about the laws in GA, but not FL.

Any long gun is good in Texas as long as you aren't a felon.

In Florida: YES!

(5) POSSESSION IN PRIVATE CONVEYANCE.--Notwithstanding subsection (2), it is lawful and is not a violation of s. 790.01 for a person 18 years of age or older to possess a concealed firearm or other weapon for self-defense or other lawful purpose within the interior of a private conveyance, without a license, if the firearm or other weapon is securely encased or is otherwise not readily accessible for immediate use. Nothing herein contained prohibits the carrying of a legal firearm other than a handgun anywhere in a private conveyance when such firearm is being carried for a lawful use. Nothing herein contained shall be construed to authorize the carrying of a concealed firearm or other weapon on the person. This subsection shall be liberally construed in favor of the lawful use, ownership, and possession of firearms and other weapons, including lawful self-defense as provided in s. 776.012.

space, but what about bears? (or unicorns?) No long guns in the hairy-chested frontier?

No wonder I read all those insipid gun rag articles about using pistols on bears.:D

bears are not subject to human laws. it is legal for a bear to have a loaded longgun in his/her vehicle. most female bears however will be driving a minivan to cart their cubs around. male bears prefer elcaminos for some odd reason.

and who told you about the unicorns??? that was supposed to be a secret.

There's one issue that rarely gets mentioned.

If you carry a large flashlight or spotlight in your car along with a loaded firearm, you may be subject to prosecution under hunting/game laws.

Probably not an issue in the city, but if you do a lot of driving in rural areas, it's something to keep in mind.

That's one reason I like Florida's gun laws.

This subsection shall be liberally construed in favor of the lawful use, ownership, and possession of firearms and other weapons, including lawful self-defense as provided in s. 776.012.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help if you are in a federal park.

Section 790.06(1) defines "concealed weapon or firearm" as "a handgun, electronic weapon or device, tear gas gun, knife, or billie, but the term does not include a machine gun as defined in s. 790.001(9)."

So it doesn't APPEAR at first glance that the CCW licence applies to the long gun, but as Hkmp5sd pointed out, it doesn't really need to for possession in a vehicle.

Yea, that's something they added after the CCW law went into effect in 1987. There were several movies out that had people wearing Mac-10/11's in shoulder rigs and someone noticed that the new law didn't prohibit it. They decided to correct that oversight in case someone wanted to give it a go. (And even though I do have a DeSantis shoulder rig for my M11/9, I did not anticipate carrying it as a CCW! :) )

Thats interesting. My local LEO (not in Florida) told me we have no state laws whatever dealing with machine guns. "That is entirely Federal jurisdiction" were his words.

Owning machineguns in Florida is covered by federal law. Carrying one concealed with a CCW is prohibited by state law.

790.06 License to carry concealed weapon or firearm.--

(1) The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is authorized to issue licenses to carry concealed weapons or concealed firearms to persons qualified as provided in this section. Each such license must bear a color photograph of the licensee. For the purposes of this section, concealed weapons or concealed firearms are defined as a handgun, electronic weapon or device, tear gas gun, knife, or billie, but the term does not include a machine gun as defined in s. 790.001(9).
