I"ve got the odd idea that the 5.7x28 would make a nice little bolt gun for fox up to coyote. Anyone know what kind of accuracy to expact from the factory 5.7? Also, where can I get a barrel chanberd for it on a Savage thread?

Originally I was thinking just get the Savage 10FP .223 and cut the barrel down to 20" and restock it, now I"m thining more that the 5.7 could be fun. I" just pull teh .223 bbl and put on the 5.7 along with a new bolt head.

Anyone have any input?

does the 5.7 have any benefits ballistically over 223 (or other ~.22cal rounds), or are you just trying to do something unique? (which is fine of course  )

Mostly I"m looking for an in-between from .22 mag and .223 Rem. the mag isn't quite enough or borderline on coyote and .223 may be a tad destructive on fox (haven't tried it with FMJ tho) So I was thinking .22 Hornet, and the 5.7 is comparable ballistically to the Hornet.

And the 5.7 FN would be unique  I mean I need something a bit 'different' to go with the rest of the non mainstream stuff I shoot :scrutiny:

I really don't know much about the future of the cartridge, but I believe right now the stuff goes for about $50 for as many rounds. Seems a bit steep for varmint hunting. But like I said, I don't know what the future is supposed to hold.

It would be a pretty neat little rifle though, and would surely attract the ladies at the range! ;) :D

It already exists -- the .22 Hornet. Kimber, Cooper, Savage, Ruger and CZ all make rifles in .22 Hornet.

The traditional 45 grain bullet will get about 2600 fps in Hornet, and with the 35 grain V-Max (which I favor) and a case full of Hodgdon's Li'l Gun, I get about 3,000 fps.

You might as well. I love the .22 Hornet and .218 Bee! ;)

All,

Here is one solution to the 5.7x28 varmint idea. If you reload the round to 2100+fps then I feel you will have an ideal varmint rifle. The round has little recoil (similar to a 9mm) and is good to 400yds.

This link is for a Rem700 barrel in 5.7x28.

Option 2 is the very ingenious 5.7 bolt on upper from Rhineland Arms.

http://www.rhinelandarms.com/ Click the box on the left "5.7*28mm".
This would be a very good option for the fast followup since you are using an AR-15 lower (target triggers) and have an AR-15 upper rail. I have contacted Rhineland Arms and they say they are getting close (maybe 30-60days out?).

I hope this is informative.

the 221 fireball is what you are looking for

check the 19 calhoun, it is superior to any .22 cal bullets.

Ouch, if that is what they are selling it for where you are, you'd be better off to order it from Midway, where they are going to be selling it for around $18 for 50. As for the future, it is hard to say. The PS 90 seems to be selling well.

What happened to 223? 5.7x28 is just 5.56x45 without the extra powder that you waste when you use a barrel under 10 inches. If you cant use a barrel that short, you should just stick with 223. Hands down a better varmint cartridge at every possible range. Cheaper too.

Maybe it would be useful in a small, light carbine like a modified 10/22 Magnum or a Buckmark Carbine. I'd still like to see it in a revolver...

But, as for performance, the .22Hornet is a lot easier to get. :D
