A shooting occurred on campus early Sunday morning, adding to Vanderbilt's recent security difficulties.

Three football players were injured in the incident, making this the second shooting tragedy for the team in a year.

University spokesman Michael Schoenfeld said university officials and police are still investigating the shooting which occurred in Morgan House.

Schoenfeld said between two and five shots were fired, and there were two guns involved. Junior wide receiver George Smith was shot in the arm in the incident. Sophomore safety Reshard Langford and freshman defensive end Derrius Dowell were injured following the shooting. Vanderbilt University Medical Center has released all three, university officals said.

Smith caught his first touchdown pass earlier that evening in the Vanderbilt's home football game against Richmond.

"There was a party on the tenth floor of Morgan House," Schoenfeld said. "At some point during the party, a female Vanderbilt student carded into the building three individuals who are not Vanderbilt students. They came up to the party. They apparently were making a disturbance and were asked to leave. They left with the student who carded them in."

Schoenfeld said the three individuals and the Vanderbilt student returned about an hour later and were again asked to leave. As they were leaving, the suspects drew guns on the party-goers.

"When they got on the elevator, two of the individuals pulled out guns and several shots were fired into the hallway," he said. The individuals apparently fled after leaving the elevator in the Morgan lobby.

Representatives from Vanderbilt University Police Department and the Offices of Student Life and Public Affairs are addressing the situation.

"This is a very serious situation," Schoenfeld said. "It’s an aberration, but it’s a serious situation."

Schoenfeld said security cameras in the Morgan elevator are part of the investigation and have provided valuable information.

"First of all, obviously security and safety has been front and center on this campus in recent weeks. There are a number of steps that Vanderbilt has taken ... all of those are continuing," Schoenfeld said.

'Vanderbilt in general is a very safe place if you take proper precautions. A student, an individual brought into a residence hall other individuals who clearly were a threat to the Vanderbilt community," Schoenfeld added.

Schoenfeld said the administration will announce a task force to review how individuals who are not Vanderbilt students are brought into residence halls and other places today. They plan to better educate students about monitoring guests that they bring in on campus.

"It was not random people walking in off the street. They were brought in by a Vanderbilt student who made it possible for these individuals to be at the party," Schoenfeld said. "When something like that happens, it's a potentially very dangerous situation."

Schoenfeld said the Vanderbilt police know the names of the student responsible for bringing the individuals on campus, but he cannot release that information..

Andrew Atwood, director of crime prevention, released a security alert Sunday morning.

According to the alert, the armed suspects were both black males weighing 160 to 180 and 200 pounds. One suspect had short black hair and was wearing a black shirt and dark pants. The other was wearing a white hat and a striped jersey with "Jackson" and "44" on the back.

The Nashville metro police department said it could not release any information until the incident report has been filed and made public record 72 hours after the crime.

Sunday morning's events left Morgan residents shocked.

"I heard gunshots and then I called 911," senior Carli Mingus, head resident adviser of Morgan, said. "I went downstairs and there was blood and glass everywhere in the stairwell. It was scary."

Junior Jon Taub, who lives on the tenth floor of Morgan, said he woke up after hearing gunshots around 1:55 a.m. He said he initially did not think that the sounds were gunshots.

"It had crossed my mind, but then I thought "no--I would never hear that here,'" he said.

Taub said police ordered everyone to stay in their rooms.

Parents of students expressed concerns about the incident.

"We just live in a culture that has very little respect for property or life," Fares Schlank, father of junior Evan Schlank, said. "Someone was in the building who was probably not supposed to be ... Who let him in?"

Schlank expressed concern for "the safety of every student here and every parent here this weekend.

"I want to see a vigorous execution of facts from Metro and a vigorous inspection from Vanderbilt," he said. "The University needs to resolve this issue so it doesn’t happen again."

Jackie Sullivan, mother of sophomore Eryn Callihan, said she does not expect incidents like this to happen at this university.

"It's just not what you think you're getting when you send your kid to Vanderbilt," Sullivan said.

Junior Ben Murphy, who lives on the tenth floor of Morgan, said the lack of security was his main concern.

"What bothers me the most is our own security in this building is limited to the RA in Lewis," Murphy said. "We have little security in Morgan; anyone can get in. This is a perfect demonstration of that."

Football coach Bobby Johnson commented on the incident in a press conference on Sunday.

"We're glad there were no dire circumstances. It could have been worse," he said. "We're thankful for that, very thankful for that. We'll try to move on and cope with it.

"I have consulted with the University officials, and they have been investigating it more than anybody. They have assured me that our players were doing the right things and there will be no sanctions from the university," Johnson said. "It's obviously very serious, and we treat it as such. We try to talk to our team all the time about making good decisions, about who they can be around, and where they are and what they're doing. Sometimes you can't account for who approaches you or comes, and where they are.

"I think our guys did the right thing and they were doing nothing wrong."

Freshman Joseph Williams was in the Branscomb lobby following the shooting in Morgan.

"We saw a bunch of people in the lobby. Then we saw a football player lying on the stairs. At first we thought he was drunk, but he was crying. The girl I was with asked, 'Is there anything I can do?' And he said, 'No.'"

R.I.P. English language.
Schoenfeld said the Vanderbilt police know the names of the student responsible for bringing the individuals on campus, but he cannot release that information..
The way I read the article, it was one student who admitted the shooters. Just how many names (plural) does one Vanderbilt student normally have?
