April Mail in Match for Fellow THR Members

March 28, 2003, 10:16 PM
OK troops.

Time to clean the cosmoline off of that old Springfield and show everyone how it's done. April's mail in match will feature surplus military rifles. 20 shots standing, with no support at a 50-yard downsized hostile enemy combatant. The shameless little dictator from Takrit, Iraq has volunteered to serve as this month's bullet catcher. Each shot that breaks the outline counts as "1" and shots breaking the X-ring count for tie-breakers.

Stock class will be as-issued, NON-CURRENT military weapons. This class will include service-grade Garands, Springfield 1903/03A3, 30/40 Krag, FN/FAL, Enfield, Mauser, Schmidt Rubin, AK variants, SKS, etc. Heck, you can even use your old Brown Bess if you like.

Improved class will include military weapons with ANY improvements from the service weapon as-issued. This class will also include current military weapons and clones -- including M-16/AR-15s and M1A/M14s.

Scoped class will include any scoped military weapon, whether it's an as-issued sniper rifle or a bubba-ed up 1903.

The Open class is for those who haven't yet figured out that you can get a sweet-shooting Swiss K31 for less than $100.

April's target will be available here (http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/2818b9cb/bc/April+Match/April+2003+Mail+in+Match.pdf?BCWi0h.ActKsIHdw)

Safe shooting and good luck!

P.S. Thank you to our troops doing the real fighting in Iraq! Please do all you can to support them and their families and let them know that most of the USA supports them wholeheartedly!

Oh -- and be careful, if you use an MAS, Mosin-Nagant or Mauser it may decide to mis-fire at a critical moment.

March 28, 2003, 10:47 PM
You have no idea how bummed out I will be if my order from the CMP doesn't get here in the next few weeks.

March 29, 2003, 02:13 AM
50 yds. The muzzle blast from my Mosin Nagant will burn the target. LOL! :what:

March 29, 2003, 02:57 AM
Website has been updated.

March 30, 2003, 12:58 AM
as soon as I can sight this lebel in (theres this white rag hanger dothingy thats in the way ) :D :D :neener:

March 30, 2003, 02:01 PM
I just bought some extra space at Yahoo, so the match files will be available at this address:

Please let me know if this works.

Safe shooting and good luck!

March 30, 2003, 02:17 PM
Target can now also be found here ('')

March 30, 2003, 08:02 PM
I would like to make the motion that anyone using an old Turk Mauser or Mosin Nagant should have to shoot at 51 yards, because, in reality, they are actually only 35 yards away as it is.:D

I would like to recommend that we reduce the number of shots fired. Actually, nevermind. It seemed to be ok shooting 20 times using the .22 target at 50 yards. I just know shooting the March match at 10 yards with those big 9mm and .45 ACP rounds made it hard to distinguish if it was two shots in a hole or three. I highly recommend that everyone print out their targets on card stock.

Now is this a enter what ever rifles you have match? AKA can I shoot my K-31 and submit that score and shoot my 1903 and submit that score too? Let me figure out how many targets I have to print out if that is the case...hmmmm....still thinking....

14 targets!

What a busy month this is going to be. :D

March 31, 2003, 01:49 AM
My Mosin is a carbine, however I am still concerned about the muzzle blast burning the target.

March 31, 2003, 08:52 AM
I shot all the rest of the matches in my backyard. I have an antigun neighbor. He has learned to tolerate the 38 and 45. He gets unhappy if I bring out a .357. He'll positively come unglued if I unleash my Garand. That means I have to drive all the way out to the range.
Oh wait a minute, I might actually be able to get to an IDPA match this month. I'll take the stuff with me.

March 31, 2003, 10:39 AM
April's target should be available

here (http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/2818b9cb/bc/April+Match/April+2003+Mail+in+Match.pdf?BCWi0h.ActKsIHdw)

or at the website Cordex posted.

Please let me know if this doesn't work.

March 31, 2003, 10:43 AM
What class would an 03/A3 that's simply had it's stock 'sporterized'? No sights, trigger, or any other mechanical modifications. Oh, and it wasn't re-bedded...

March 31, 2003, 07:40 PM
Both of those long yahoo links give me "Can't be displayed" messages. My version of acrobat failed to initialize properly.
However, I was able to get to it from my comfuser at work so I'm ready for ya. Be still my beating heart.

March 31, 2003, 10:39 PM
You need Adobe Acrobat version 5.0. Available free at

Also -- printing it on soft "manila" paper is pretty close to target paper and makes scoring easier.

I'd say that's a stock class. You can get a non-firing 03A3 at www.odcmp.com if you want to try to replace that stock with an original.

April 1, 2003, 09:56 AM
No way, I love the stock.. it's just been cleaned up.. shortened under the barrel and the barrel 'topper' removed. My dad did the work a long time ago, and did quite a nice job..

ROTR - None of the Yahoo links seem to be working. The target link Cordex supplied did work though.

April 4, 2003, 11:25 AM
Just downloaded and printed the target, not sure I can even see the little wiener at 50yrds. This could get interesting.

I just keep thinking that 20 rounds is a lot of rounds to try and fit in that guy. Plus that is a lot of practiving. For those of us made of steel, how are you going to count 20 holes on the paper if they are all in that little man? Can we reduce it to ten?

April 4, 2003, 08:34 PM
how are you going to count 20 holes on the paper if they are all in that little man?

If you've got a ragged hole around te "X" and no fliers, I'll assume shots went through previous holes -- just like shooting NRA Bullseye. The shooter gets the benefit of the doubt.

But remember - this is offhand, not benchrest shooting. That dictator is pretty little out at 50 yards:)

April 7, 2003, 06:50 PM
Although 20 shots may be difficult to score, please score your shooting yourself. Be sure to keep it honest but also give yourself the benefit of the doubt.

This is for fun, so be sure to get out there and shoot!

Boy I need this month to make up for last. I am disappointed in myself. Any word on if we are supposed to enter just one military rifle? I would think we are supposed to enter just one rifle for each catagory right? Or can we enter multiples and then have them listed by caliber and gun? I would imagine one gun per class in order to save the organizers from having to score the usual 13 participants times their 12 surplus rifles each.

Now I wish I would have know about the open class in the first match. I am behind!

April 8, 2003, 11:12 PM
Any word on if we are supposed to enter just one military rifle?

I'll allow THREE different types of rifles total per contestant - regardless of class. They must be different types of rifles (great excuse to get one of those Yugo SKSs). A note of caution - your LOWEST score is added to your yearly cumulative total.

El Rojo
April 9, 2003, 12:04 AM
Hey I had a question about the total score. Should we make that a grand total or should we average it? Nevermind since we can always shoot open class and most of us shouldn't have an excuse not to shoot in every match. I was just thinking that those people that don't have a gun to shoot for a particular match would be hurt quite a bit in the overall. Then again there is no prize that goes along with this so who really cares? But if no one cared why are we keeping score? :uhoh:

April 9, 2003, 05:17 PM
now i'm gonna have to blow off a bunch of rounds outta the bushmaster and get all practiced up. :D

hey, i'm not seeing any scoring rings on the target, how are we supposed to score it, or do i have a glitch?

April 9, 2003, 05:21 PM
Simple. Count the hits and the "X"s. The best possible score is 20 - 20X. (and I bet I know someone who will come close).
It ain't me.

El Rojo
April 19, 2003, 02:10 PM
Ok, next question, even though it won't get answered until after I am done shooting.

Is a Remington 700 VS in .308 with a scope considered a scoped military rifle? I know that the Remington 700 action is used as a precision weapon in many services. Not necessarily my exact configuration. By the same means, can I shoot my Ruger 10/22 as a scoped military rifle since the Israelis use a suppressed version for their military use? The "Any scoped military rifle" catagory doesn't specify if it is a "Non-current" or can be a "Improved" class of weapon. That is why I think there should be 5 catagories. Scoped Stock and a Scoped Improved class. That isn't entirely fair if I am using a Scoped Improved vs. a Scoped Stock is it? From the .22 LR shoot, I found out that it really doesn't matter, but still it is the theory of it all.

I guess I might print up a few more targets and shoot a variety of guns and decide what I am going to submit.

April 19, 2003, 02:52 PM
I guess if you look hard enough you can find almost every rifle has been used by somebody in the military somewhere. I would love if someone shot with a .50 BMG if they would make a vidio for the web. :) :) HINT. At 50yds it would tear the paper apart.
Just remember this is for fun and don't make ROTR sorry for setting things up.

April 19, 2003, 10:29 PM
I consider a military rifle to be one with military markings on it, not a new rifle based on some caliber or action used somewhere sometime by some Army. If you have an Israeli-marked Ruger 10/22, go ahead and shoot in the stock or scoped class. A 10/22 from Wally World is in the Open class. Stock means "as issued" to troops. Improved means a military rifle improved from "as issued" or it's in current use like an AR15/M16. Scoped means scoped MILITARY rifle. Open means anything else.

If you have an M1903A4, M1D, M21, M24, M40A1 or another military-issued sniper rifle, or if you've added a scope to your 1917 Eddystone, it's in the scoped category. If you have a Remington 700 VS with a scope, it's in the open category. I suppose some military somewhere may have issued scoped rifles without a trigger job or some improvements, but I don't think it warrants a new class.

I guess I should change the rules to: "If you shoot at a target, submit it for scoring." Character means doing the right thing even when nobody's looking.

As far as the .50 BMG goes, I'd love to see a target come back with only Saddam's beret left:D .

El Rojo
April 20, 2003, 11:50 AM
I don't have time to go into details this morning, but it doesn't matter what class I am in. That was a tough SOB to hit. I got him, but not a whole lot of times. Very challenging month. And of course my best score wasn't with a scoped rifle, not my 10/22 or my Rem 700. It wasn't my M1A or my M1 Garand. Any guesses what my best score was shot with? And the score wasn't too impressive either. Darn that guy and his RPG!

At this time the only recomendation I have is if you submit multiple targets, your highest score should go to the monthly tally. If not, I am screwed. Just limit the submitions to one per class, no entering the open class if you have any of the other classes. Then to encourage shooting more than one gun, the highest score should go to the monthly total. Otherwise people are only going to shoot their race guns.

Talk more later after church. Happy Easter and thanks again ROTR for putting this on.

April 20, 2003, 03:03 PM
Nice try El Rojo. You must be in sales.:)

This month is difficult, but I'm hoping that it's difficult for all. Remember -- no benches, sitting, kneeling or other kind of rest -- this is offhand.

The LOWEST score entered by each person is carried forward. We will use the curve that Bedlamite developed to make each month count the same.

Does anyone know how to calculate how the size of this little guy (3.5" tall at 50 yards) compares to a full-sized Saddam? Is it like shooting at a full-sized Saddam at 1000 yards? (discounting the difference in trajectory at 50 ***** vs. 1000 yards of course). I put it together figuring it really wasn't much different than shooting a soda can at 50 yards.

Live and learn. I want to keep these fun for all and not impossible. Please supply feedback like EL Rojo!

April 20, 2003, 03:27 PM
Does anyone know how to calculate how the size of this little guy (3.5" tall at 50 yards) compares to a full-sized Saddam?

The little bugger is on one knee, so full height doesn't help. top of his head to his crotch is 3", compared to about 40" for the average man, so he is about 1/13th scale, or about equivilant to 650-700 yards away.

April 20, 2003, 04:34 PM
Dang if that at 50yds is same as real at 650yds I will have to get closer or (cheat) in real life. (which I plan to do) I.E. if threat at over 50yds I will use support (tree/stick/ground/etc) as brace.

April 20, 2003, 04:49 PM
equivilant to 650-700 yards away

Bedlamite -- You 'da Man as always. Good call!

I was thinking of doing this one as it should be done - one knee, sitting, prone...but I thought we'd start with offhand since that is usually part of the High Power course of fire. I would like to do this one again in the future in a more supported position (and after I get my AR15).

El Rojo
April 20, 2003, 06:41 PM
I second the someday having some sort of support. I still hate that bastard. Are you sure you want to take lowest score? My other targets are probably going to get burned away in the house fire sometime today if that is still the case. I still get to have my integrity if I burn down my house right? Or is it just as bad that I set my house on fire to destroy the 4-2x low score I shot with my M1A as it is to just say I didn't shoot it?

April 21, 2003, 11:30 AM
El Rojo -- I'll tell you what. I was thinking of doing this anyway. I will a QUANTITY category in the Mail in Match. Each month from now on, I will better define how many entries with different guns each shooter is allowed - based on the kind of weapons featured. We will track the shooter who enters the most legal targets. Persistence pays.

I really don't have a problem with NOT sending a target in (you don't have to burn down your house). I DO have a problem with shooting a course of fire multiple times with the same weapon to try for a better score.

April 21, 2003, 01:21 PM

I would like to do this one again in the future in a more supported position (and after I get my AR15). Yea, I'd agree with that. This one would be fun to do again later shooting prone. If you really did have a shot at this guy or Your Momma Bin Laden, do you really think you'd shoot it standing? I'd be on my belly, with a sling or shooing off a rock, vehicle or something.

No complaints though. I'll get out there and do it.

El Rojo
April 22, 2003, 12:30 AM
I don't know if we necessarily need a "who has the most guns" contest. I simply request that your best score goes to the grand finale total. It is a positive bi-product of having more than one gun to shoot. Simply limit your entries to one target per class. Shoot each gun only once. Shoot as many guns as you want as long as you shoot each gun at one target, and one target only. So for example. Lets see how many guns I have to shoot in this one.

Stock: 12

Improved: 2

Scoped: 0

Open: 7

Ok, so I have a total of 21 firearms I could have shot in this match if we don't count handguns and shotguns. However, since I have firearms that fit into one of the three military surplus catagories, I should be prohibited from entering the open class. So now I have a choice of 14 rifles I can shoot in the Stock and Improved class. I should be allowed to submit two targets. One for the Stock class and one for the Improved class. I should be allowed to shoot 1 target for each of my 12 stock rifles, but I may only submit one and I can only print out one target for each rifle. The same would apply for the Improved class, I print two targets, I shoot one gun for one target. As far as my final score that goes into the grand tally, I don't agree that it should be the lowest of the stock and improved score. At the least it should be an average of the two. I would argue that since you took the time to shoot two classes, you should be rewarded by being to use the highest of the two or three submitted scores for your grand tally.

If we are trying to discourage people from printing out multiple targets for a single firearm, it is impossible and I think it misses the point of the match. If people are going to cheat, there is really nothing we can do about it other than having a notary watch the match and sign the document too or having two THR members present to sign off the targets. I don't have to print out mulitple targets to practice. I simply take a cut in half manila folder and place a 3/4" target paster in the middle of it. That 3/4" target paster is about the size of your bulls eye and the half a manila folder is about the size of the 8.5"x11" target. The tighter I get the group, the better. Once I think I am ready, I shoot the real target. And that is it. If I botch it, I botch it. As you will see by my scores this month, I didn't do all that great and if I were going to cheat, I would probably try to get at least a 17 or 18!!! There is nothing we can do about cheaters other than look for powder burns on their paper. If they take the time out of their day to cheat and send it in, they know that their win is empty and a sad, sad commentary on the state of their existence. Lets not let their miserable excuse for breathing ruin our day!

Again, thanks a millon ROTR. What a great thing this is even if I am mad at myself for not hitting that bastard RPG man more. And by the way, I shot my best score with the good old Schmidt Ruben K-31. If you don't have a K-31 yet, please go buy one now. Quit wasting your time on all other projects until you get a K-31. :D

April 22, 2003, 11:18 PM
And I learned something today. I have really been neglecting my off hand shooting. I'm sending it in anyway, but you guys at the top have nothing to worry about. At least no one can accuse me of cheating. But it was a great day to be out at the range and that's all that really matters.:D

April 23, 2003, 12:54 AM
It's been real busy at the Vaughn house this month. I hope I can get the time and appropriate weather to get in 20 rounds before the month ends. I've got a target printed and ready to go though.

I'm new to this postal match thing, so this might be a dumb question, but is this considered a CMP-affiliated club?:D

April 26, 2003, 02:07 PM
Well I shot it. Not very happy with my results. Did it with AR-15 sling and heavy barrel. 9 out of 20 hits and only one X. :(
Of the "hits" only 5-6 would slow/stop him.
Then I took the SKS. UFTA I had 2 POOR hits out of 20. I made the mistake of putting a old laptop below target to destroy the hard drive. It shredded the target about 6" above and one foot back. I was not happy with it anyway. Thing is I KNOW the SKS is capable of much better then that. Couple were not even on paper just cut the top.
For real fun I ran to target and back, grabbed the AR and fired 20 rds into used sks target. No great surprise only on poor hit. Looked like shotgun. I have to claim the one hit as luck.

El Rojo
April 26, 2003, 09:31 PM
Did it with AR-15 sling and heavy barrel. Remember this is an un-aided standing shoot. No sling should have been used. But at keast I wasn't the only one frustrated. This was a hard month.

April 27, 2003, 03:51 AM
Actually I noticed the "Unaided" after I shot. So I wrote in "Sling used" and pointed at unaided. I guess when I printed it off I was thinking no prone/kneeling, rests/bench/etc. It is not a fancy sling just a 1.5" black "tactical" sling. :) With no sling I doubt I would have gotten 2 hits.
BTW is it legal to shoot 4 and check target and shoot another 4 etc? I can't see where I am hitting at 50yds. So I shot 4 saw I needed to go left 3" did them and dead center. :) Then was high for next group and all over.
Actually under Improved wouldn't a sling and 16" heavy barrel fit? I didn't mark stock as it is not. Here ROTR tried to make it easy and we find these little grey areas. :) :) I will send it in and he can mark/file it in which ever area he feels is correct.

April 27, 2003, 11:01 AM
I'm new to this postal match thing, so this might be a dumb question, but is this considered a CMP-affiliated club?

Not a dumb question, but no. Check out the www.odcmp.com website for a local CMP club.

April 27, 2003, 11:06 AM
Kind of a gray area regarding slings. A sling shouldn't REALLY help if you're shooting offhand, since your feet are still the only support you have. I should have specified use of sling or not, so we'll let it go for this month.

Walking up or using a scope to check your shots is just fine.

April 28, 2003, 12:59 AM
I actually had a really good group, but it was about 2 inches high and 2 inches right of target. Was using a new batch of Yugo 7.64X54 that I've never used before. Seemed dead on when I sighted in, so I'm not sure what happened. Oh well, eagerly awaiting May's match so I can redeem myself.

April 28, 2003, 10:15 PM

Join the club. My best score was with my K-31 and it was not even 50% hits.

April 29, 2003, 11:52 AM
In all honesty guys were not talking about an easy target here. It's not even as big as that pepsi can last month. So don't get down on yourselves for having a hard time with it. I expect a tough time myself as I have not fired a rifle lately. I'll be trying to shoot my target this afternoon.

I shot my annual pistol qualification yesterday and only got a 98 (still expert but not my best day shooting). I blame soreness from having three days in a row of having to chase and fight with various felons. Really, it's normally a rare occurrence. Most guys I go after with warrants come along relatively quietly. The last three days have been very unusual, (but they make for a great excuse for bad shooting).

More to come.

April 29, 2003, 09:02 PM
Well, I shoot it today, and all I can say is it's a good thing that it's only a picture of an RPG.

April 30, 2003, 07:31 PM
just as long as they were more sore than you when you were done with them...;)

April 30, 2003, 11:44 PM
I sent my target today. Yes my "injuries" played a role in the score. Hard to support a rifle on an arm with pulled muscles. (excuse # 57) I scored a 5/20.

My injuries occurred Sunday night while trying to remove a Very large and stout suicidal drunk form the middle of the highway. I wrestled with him for at least 5 minutes before another officer arrived. The two of us together finally bulldogged the guy and cuffed him. One pair of cuffs attached to each arm and then connected because his arms wouldn't go that far behind his back. I came out pretty good considering that the first time I tried to subdue him, he threw me approximately 10 feet ( I landed on my feet though). After I sprayed him with OC he only got madder. Not a good night.

Anyway I look forward to Mays match.

I thought pepper spray took them down instantly?

I was wishing to get my Swede and shoot it for the improved class before the month was over. Oh well. I think I still have an extra RPG man target around and I just might shoot it for the heck of it when I get a chance. Good luck, I can't wait for the scores.

May 1, 2003, 07:12 AM
What was really bad is that was the third fight in three days. I haven't met any serious resistance in the last 6 months. Then 3 fights in 3 days. The first wasn't too bad. The guy was pretty much subdued by the plate glass window he jumped through to get out of the house he was in. The rest was pretty easy. The second one was cuffed and compliant from the house to the car then headbutted me at the door to the car (cheek still sore). I never let go, so again, not much of a fight. He went straight to the ground when I applied some gentle pursuasion techniques. That guy Sunday was a doosy though. Not good when they simply wipe the pepper spray from their face.

Anyway rest assured I intend to come home every night I work, at any cost. You can't get rid of me that easily.

May 1, 2003, 08:23 PM

sounds like mr head butt coulda used one of those... :fire:

you guys have screen tests in 'bama?

I think they have used the screen method in every state. I have heard of it in the PRK even.

April Results: A difficult, but very fun shoot. He's pretty small out there at 50 yds. I had the pleasure of blasting off the little dictator's mustache and putting a nice string of three into his nether regions :D.

Special mention to Deputy Vaughn for playing while injured in the line of duty. Thank you for your service sir!

Another special mention to T.Stahl who: A. Sent his entry in from Germany B. Won the Stock class while shooting from 50 METERS. C. "Bent" the new April 1 German law prohibiting shooting at human silhouettes -- he figures this month's target wasn't quite human. I second that opinion.

Thanks ROTR. I am glad to know I wasn't too far off from everyone else. I hate that bastard RPG man! At least I got the most X's! I am proud of the Swiss K-31. I see that you (ROTR) got the same score with yours. Were you using the Swiss match stuff? I loaded up some 150 gr FMJ/BT loads for it, but decided to use the match stuff instead.

Thanks again ROTR. I appreciate your time and effort. I just don't understand why more guys and gals don't get out and shoot it.

Thank you, ROTR! I wasn't sure whether the letter would make it in time.
I just hope that the BMI doesn't surf THR. Anyways, all evidence is far away now and I don't expect you'd had it over. ;)

El Rojo -- I use the GP11 stuff from Aim Surplus. I also had a string of 5 vertical shots right at x-level, but j-u-s-t to the Right (where else?). One clipped his shoulder and the rest cut the empty space between his left shoulder and knee. 7 fliers all over the paper and 2 near-misses.

I was not letting the barrel cool much between shots - trying to keep it more like a real situation. And I haven't accurized it yet with the shim in the receiver... and there was wind...and the sun was in my eyes...and...

You had a nice grouping with yours, it's just a very small target.

Gotta love those K31s! A fine battle rifle for $100.

One more bit of K31 cool-ness - I'd never noticed this before since I usually load, shoot and unload it much more slowly. When I eject the brass on mine, it twirls in mid-air about a foot above and to the right of the chamber. Being a bolt action, the brass is cooled down, so I can catch about 80% of my brass in mid-air.:D I've never noticed a rifle to be so consistent in brass ejection.

T.Stahl -- What is the BMI? (Bavarian Motor Inspectors? Bureau of Moral Ineptitude?)

As far as the evidence goes...target? What target? From Germany? You BMI guys are kidding-right?

And I'm still not convinced that guy is human after seeing what he did to his subjects.:fire:

Oh-oh, I forgot, there's a German cop on this board, Trooper. Fortunately he's on our side, I guess. ;)

The BMI is the Bundesministerium des Inneren, the Interior Ministry.
Actually, I wasted a lot of ammo as the first shot was the one that entered through the target's forehead. :p
