Take the Cake

As it turns out I had a birthday during September as I was trying to come up with a new target for next month. My thoughts drifted to a strange idea: What if I wanted to blow out the candles on my cake using bullets instead of breath? Surely the flame would go out if I got close enough and it definitely would be gone with a direct hit to a candle.
But, what if I hit the cake? A glancing blow across the top would not be good but not tragic. A direct hit to the side of the cake could make for a messy situation!

This months target is a representation of this hypothetical situation. You are trying to “blow-out” all the candles and not hit the cake. Shots hitting the flames or the candles count as +10 points. Any shot hitting the top of the cake costs you 10 points and any shot hitting the side of the cake costs you 25 points (and you need to clean up the mess!).

You have NINE (9) shots to blow out all nine candles.

TARGET DOWNLOAD (http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/CAKE.pdf) : http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/CAKE.pdf

The standard distances will be 10 yards for Pistol and 25 yrds for Rifle. (plus 50 yrds and 100yrds may be attempted for supported rifle classes.)

Some reminders on match procedures:
You are expected to shoot the match targets only for score and only the approved number of targets for each class. You should not be shooting several match targets and submitting the best score.

Scoring:

Normally accepted scoring rules this month. Shots breaking the line into a scoring feature is scored at the higher value except if you hit the cake and a candle in that case only the negative score counts!! Add up the scores from the nine rounds.

UNSUPPORTED/FREEHAND CLASSES: 10yrds handgun, 25 yrds rifle
PISTOL STOCK - Standard pistols with barrels 6" or less
PISTOL RIMFIRE - .22LR Pistols
PISTOL SCOPED/IMPROVED - Any scoped pistol or with significant improvements from out-of-the-box or pistols with barrels more than 6".
RIFLE STOCK - Standard rifles with iron sights
RIFLE SCOPED - Any scoped rifle
RIFLE RIMFIRE - .22LR Rifle
AIRGUN PISTOL- un-scoped airgun
AIRGUN RIFLE – un-scoped air rifle

SUPPORTED/BENCHREST CLASSES
RIFLE STOCK SUPPORTED – Standard rifles with iron sights at 50yrds and/or 100yrds
RIFLE SCOPED SUPPORED - Any scoped rifle at 50yrds and/or 100yrds

Be sure to post your final scores with:

Your THR ID/NAME____________
CLASS___________
Distance_______________
Score____________
Posting scans of your target is appreciated but not required. A narrative description of your strategy and execution is also appreciated but not required.

Tie scores will be decided by post date - shoot the match and post as soon as you can!

NOTE: Due to my work schedule the end date for this match will be November 6th. This gives everyone a few more days!

Mr. Photo_guy, this one looks like way cool.

My printer is a little screwed up and when I take the ONE copy I print off to Kinkos (or whatever) I only end up with a black and white copy. I azzume that is ok.

Finally.........

By the way you talk (on the net, as it were) you sure sound like you are older than nine. I could be wrong. :D

CCW- B&W is fine. I did this target in color for no good reason other than I could. The targets do not need to be printed in color.

By the way you talk (on the net, as it were) you sure sound like you are older than nine. I could be wrong.

Well, gosh. Thanks. Yes, I am older than nine. If I made a target with one candle per year...well, it would take almost a full box of ammo to complete the match! Each candle represents more than one year on the target.

This looks like a blast. I just got a new .223 Savage, so hopefully I can get it zeroed and enter the scoped rifle class for a change...along with every other class I have gun for. :D

It looks like it is possible to get 2 flames with a single shot... in several places if you are shooting 44 or bigger, but in one even in the airgun divisions.

Did auto rotate and fit target on adobe ,nice fiture, especially since target comes out bigger (landscape orientation)----allowed?? Also,, a 22 lr target load (if it hits the cake) is simply going to make a neat little hole and given the propper temperature and time ,the icing is goin to cover it up and nobody notice it. What am saying here is dont i get lesser penalty (i shoot 22 lr) than say- Red Tornado here with a .223 who can put out all the candles with one bullet by hitting the cake (what a mess!!).... :D .just joking, filling super competetive today. (dont have to answer it photo_guy).

One in the middle, boom, all out, +90 points and a 50 point bonus. What about the second shot?

When I try to go to the target, I get this message, "You are not authorized to view this page".

What's this about? Do I have to be an AOL member?

photo_guy, Printers and computers can do odd things. Does it make sense to have a length scale on the target? I am imagining something like a 1" line labeled 'This line is 1" long', so I could put a ruler up to it and see that I'm not shooting at too large or too small a target.

photo_guy
October 6, 2005, 01:52 AM
RJM - You should not need to be an AOL subscriber to get at the target. Perhaps you should check to be sure the full URL is being used when you click the link?

WayneC - Ascale reference is not a bad idea. I use PDF format to reduce the errors from system to system. The main question I would have is whould most users know what to do if they found the measurement was wrong on their output? I be few would know how to fix it.

Have time this afternoon. Wind bit gusty---but finger told me to go ahead. I have 3 near misses but manage to hit them all :) . Chalenging target especially since I shot all the large target first then perspire on all the small ones. Next time im going to hit the smaller ones first and enjoy the last few shotts  !!!

Photo-Guy,

I'm still getting the following message. Being only semi-computer-literate, I have no idea what to do next.

Looks like you have tapped into one of those ultra secret military computer database :) OK im not that computer literate so it going to be the blind leading the blind. Long way--- have someone (someone who knows your e-mail address) mail it to you. Just temporary fix-get someone 100x more computer literate than i am.

Something like that. Or, more likely, I accidently screwed up some settings on my firewall while messing around with this irrascible box of electronics. I'll have to call my son-in-law, who's a computer wizard, and have him reset things. :cuss:

For some fun try shooting The High Road Virtual Match

The articles said that AOL was not effected. I use Compuserve, which is a part of AOL, so I don't think that's the problem. I think the problem is I was messing around with my "Zone Alarm" and "Ad Aware" software and I think I reset something I shouldn't have. And it's going to take my son-in-law to figure out which item to click back.

Hopefully, he'll have time to get me cured sometime this week. :banghead:

Well, I got it done but I have nothing to brag about. Just a little too much of the shakes. OTOH, it was a gorgeous day to be at the range. I noticed that we have an extension until Nov 6th, so maybe I'll be able to get back out there with my rifle.

By the way, for you computer types. I found out what was messing me up. I have a program called Ad-Aware from LavaSoft and they apparently added a new filter to block pop up ads and, apparently, it's too aggressive because It was blocking links and all kinds of stuff, including the target for this match. However, my genius son-in-law fixed it by switching my pop up blocking to Auto Zone.

Here are the scores for Little Loudmouth and me for the Oct. Match.
Lots of bad weather up here lately, we almost didn't get to shoot it.
Today was nice, and we made it to the range this afternoon.
Supposed start to rain again tonight.

Just enough wind to push my shots to the right.
I tried to allow for it, but obviously didn't do it too well.

I think the reason for the light turnout this month is that a lot of the players are out hunting. Anyway, I got back to the range with my rifle.

Score..... 35, ......... 60 -25. I got the cake.

A bad day at the range is still a great day.

Not too many players this month. Here are the scores.
Kudos to bagul who appears to be the only one to "get his birthday wish" this month.
Also, appreciation goes to dxkj who had the hardest time with the target but was brave enough to share his scores! This is what these matches are all about.

NEXT MONTH: I am working on the match for next month. Look for it to be posted soon. I have decided that this will be a NOV/DEC match since so many people will be busy with the holidays.

Here is a hint regarding the next match. My thinking went like this:
November....Thanksgiving.....Turkey....gobble, gobble...movie....Beef Critter!

Anyone have a guess?

Correction.

In the Scoped Rifle Supported, I shot a +35, not +50. My distance was 50.

That puts me in last place.

I thought I'd get to the range Saturday to shoot some pistols but circumstances didn't allow it. Just as well, I probably would have been -100 with the CZ-52.

I shot a rifle a few weeks but was waiting to post. Blast, I could have been "not last" (barely) for the first time. ;) Oh well, I guess that'll teach me about procrastination.

Nice shooting Bagul.

And I've figured out that if I'm going to hit little tiny candles at 50 yds with a rifle, I'm going to need something more than an antique .22 rifle. My next wish list item is a .17 HMR rifle. I've already started the research. I'm thinking Ruger.
