This old gun belonged to my grand father. All I know is that my father took it to be restored years ago. He gun smith made a new gunstock exactly like the original. Unfortunatelly the bottom barrel was changed to a 38 Spl. The engravings and everything else is original.
After spending some time on Google all I know is that those guns are reffered as drillings. I'd like to know more about it, when or where it was made, how much it is worth etc.
Thanks in advance.

Pictures of the gun (let me know if there is anything else you want to see):

The proof marks appear to be German, but that is about all I can tell you without more information. Those guns usually had the maker's name on the barrels.

If the maker's name isn't somewhere on the gun, then it's a "guild gun", where no one maker made the firearm, but instead it was passed from one specialist (action maker, barrel maker, stock maker, etc.) until the firearm was complete.

Market realities for drillings are that hammer guns bring less money than hammerless, big name manufacturers (Kriefhoff, Merkel, Sauer, etc) bring much more money than guild guns, and non-original guns bring much less than all-original.

You didn't mention anything about bore condition, take more $$$ off if there is pitting in the shot or rifle bore. I'm also guessing that the upper barrels are 16 gauge - they almost always are on Germanic guns.

Best guess as to value would be in the $500 to $600 range.

You might want to post your questions over on www.gunshop.com
They know quite a bit about European guns over there.

If you don't see a crown, eagle, or other symbol with an "N" by it, the gun is NOT rated for Nitro Powders!

Here is a link to a reference page:

If it doesn't load the first time, try again. I just checked the site.

Good luck and be careful!

Whatever you do, don't sell it!

With family history like that, it's worth far more to you than anyone else could ever assign it.
