For general discussions on topics which don't fit the forums here at THR, Oleg set up the website http://www.armedpolitesociety.com for your dancing and dining and family entertainment.

enjoy!

Been down that road already. That site is loaded with people who don't have the topic driven standards that we do over here. There didn't appear to be any sort of moderating going on whatsoever. No real organization of the topics, and there is an extremely loud minority of posters who prefer endless personal attacks and escalating insults over real discussion. Discussion value of that board: F-. Mindless entertainment value of it: oh, I'll give it a C.

Unfortunatley, I have to agree. I found this board a few months ago and have been throughly enjoying it.

After having a thread closed that I had a part in for being off topic, I checked into armedpolitesociety.com too. Masterpiece Arms hit the nail on the head. The lack of moderation there has completely soured my experiece with this forum, since the two are related.

The question of controversial topics isnt answered by either:

A: not talking about them at all

OR

B: talking about them with no restraint on the behaviour in that conversation

My 2 cents.

No real organization of the topics,APS is an open forum. By definition there are no 'topics'. and there is an extremely loud minority of posters who prefer endless personal attacks and escalating insults over real discussion Apparently, you found someone who didn't agree with you. :p

I think APS is a great forum. There are virtually no limits on what can be discussed and the tone and demeanor are respectful and courteous IMO.

Huh? Of course there are topics. They are chosen by the individual posters. It's simple ORGANIZATION that is sorely needed over there (among other things).

My quote:
and there is an extremely loud minority of posters who prefer endless personal attacks and escalating insults over real discussion

R.H. Lee:
Apparently, you found someone who didn't agree with you.

So what's your point? That endless personal attacks and escalating insults are always O.K., or that they're O.K. if you disagree with someone?

the tone and demeanor are respectful and courteous IMO
Self contradiction must be in fashion. A second ago you acknowleged that APS is a place of endless personal attacks and escalating personal insults. Will you make up your mind please.

I always loved the roundtable when it was over here at THR, but I never got used to it over at APS. Just wasn't the same. :(

As for the " extremely loud minority of posters who prefer endless personal attacks and escalating insults over real discussion", we had that problem when the Roundtable was over here too. I seem to remember that being one of the main reasons why it was taken off this site. :(

I would not let APS "sour" your opinion of THR. They are two distinct entities; one organized and one not.

If you do not like the unorganized nature of APS, then don't visit it. But don't judge THR by what you read on APS.

Many of the posters here are at APS too, and it's nice sometimes to be able to ask questions and discuss topics that aren't THR material. The breadth and depth of knowledge here is astounding.

But even if it is not moderated, it does seem to be more self-policed than most unmod groups, and I think that the THR model has taken root there. I still don't see any cursing. APS is more freewheeling than The Roundtable, and may not be for everyone.

I objected when Oleg ended Roundtable, but I think APS will be better.

Thanks Art,

I didn't know that I was going to start something like this. We are generally a solid group and a lot of us have other thoughts and ideas going beyond the 2A but need a place to voice and vent. As mentioned above take APS for what it is and THR for what it is.

Hokay, so some like it and some don't. Life is like that, I've noticed.

I meant to lock it, leaving it just for info.

So, locked.

APS does have moderation. Read my sticky post at the top: if you think someone is being rude, let me know and I wll take care of it. Basically, members can tell me who to eject. Repeated false nomination would also result in ejection, so a troll can't abuse that arrangement.

I bounced one person yesterday on my own initiative. I am a member of APS, too.
