I've been experimenting with Universal for 9mm. Don't have a 40. So far it's giving decent velocity and very clean burning with 115g FMJ.

Hodgdon Clays load data for:
9mm (http://www.hodgdon.com/data/pistol/9mmluger.php)
40S&W (http://www.hodgdon.com/data/pistol/40sw.php)
Hope that helps! :)

BE CAREFUL with Clays in 40.

I agree with "HSMITH." I think Clays is too fast burning a powder for cartridges like .40 S&W that develop their best performance at relatively high pressures (in this case, mid-30K psi). Clays works very well in cartridges that employ moderate pressures like .45 ACP. I have used Universal in .40 with great success. Two Winchester powders, WSF and 540, give near-equivalent performance in .40 (and are also at nearly the same burning rate).
