My dad and I are purchasing handguns tomorrow. Looking for the best recommended autoload and the best recommended revolvers out on the market for under $400. Any suggestions?
Please feel free to email any website links or suggestions to

In that price range for new handguns, I'd recommend RUGER. They are generally very well made, durable and the company stands behind them.
Good luck,

jeffwendy,
Welcome to the forums.
A little more info would help, what are you planning to use these handguns for?
I would also generaly reccomend Ruger. They are hard to beat in any price range.
Let us know what you get.

What caliber? What purpose? Can't beat .22 for shooting a lot with cheaply, but it might not fit your needs depending on what you want it for.

I'll go along with Ruger, mostly:
For plinking, target and small game, the Ruger Standard Model (MK I, II or III). For formal target shooting, I like the 512 (heavy 5 1/2" barrel) version.
For concealed carry, the SP 101 in .357 Magnum, preferrably with the 3 1/16" barrel.
For a versatile woods gun, bigger than a .22, the Ruger GP 100 in .357 Magnum with a 4 to 6 inch barrel.
For deer and larger game, the Ruger Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk in .45 Colt or .44 Magnum.
My one exception to the Ruger recommendation is the Kimber M1911, full size (mine is the basic Classic Custom.)

Jeffwendy...you really didn't give us much to work with.
Are you hunting? Self defense? Concealed? Are you security? Cop? Range plinker? What caliber? What is your experience with guns? Why am I wasting my time?
That said, I respond with all the vagueness taken into account and recommend a Glock police trade or a used Glock.

You're buying tomorrow, but don't have a clear idea what yet? I suggest you spend a little more time in research. And don't worry overmuch if you end up with the "wrong" first gun.
For $400, there's a lot of choices (but don't forget that you'll be wanting ammo and accessories).
(edited to add )
If I were going to spend $400-ish on a handgun, I'd be getting a Ruger SP-101 3" (or preferably, if I could find it, S&W K-frame 3" equivalent), a Ruger MK I, II or III with goodies, a CZ or clone in 9mm or .40. But that's me, buying guns to fit my precieved needs or percieved holes in my collection.

If the budget is strictly under $400, you'll need to go with ruger.

Used S&W revolvers, pick up a nice M15 or 19. A 65 or a 66 would also work if you don't mind stainless steel.
For an auto I would look at a used Glock 9mm or a CZ.

If they must be brand new, I would say Ruger ont he revolvers and Ruger or EAA Witness on the auto's.
Used certainly expands the list. S&W, Glock, etc. become availbable.

S&W. Used, maybe new autos.
Ruger. New autos, some new revolvers.
CZ. New.
Used Glocks or maybe Sigs.
Springfield XD or WWII GI 1911, maybe new at that price, maybe used.
Taurus. New.
$400 is a pretty good price point if you don't mind used. There are still a lot of options if you want new.
