I'm looking at a used 640 CAH2xxx for $389.95. I'm not sure if this is a new model or 640-1 as I can't tell by serial number. Is this price typical for this gun used?

Greeting's Laura-

The S&W model 640 .357 magnum was made between 1990-1995,
and the book says NIB value is $360.

Also, the 640-1 was made from 1996 to 1999; and its stated NIB
value is listed as $425.

The gun you are looking at (with a CAH serial prefix) was made after
August of 1994. Sorry, but the Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson
isn't more definitive. Hope this helps?

How would rate the price? Too much or about right? I'll probably swing by the shop on Tuesday to look at it, if it's still there.

I would think the price would be in line with current Mass pricing~ :uhoh:

That's what I thought - a tad high but typical of this state. Thanks for the feedback. I might swing by and see how it looks. :)

Well the 640 was a .38 Special made from 1990-1995
The 640-1 is a .357 magnum produced 1995-1997
The 640-2 is a .38 produced 1997-1999

The CA serial number prefix seems to have been only used in 1994.

My guess is what tyou are looking at is a .38 special 640. Which is very nice because it is made on the slightly smaller J frame whereas the -1 & -2 were made on the slightly larger J-magnum frame.
The biggest real difference is the 1/4" barrel length. The 640 had a 1-7/8" barrel while the -1 & -2 had the 2-1/8".

Also, if you open the cylinder and look at the yoke you can read the model number.

Interestingly, this is listed as a 640 .357 so unless there's a mistake....it's probably a magnum with a lock - but I'm guessing.

Oops! My friend Blues Bear is right. The original S&W model 640
was chambered only in .38 Special; NOT .357 magnum~! :uhoh:

Sorry, about the mistake; guess I didn't study the book hard enough
before responding. :D

By the time the lock came to be S&W was already up to the CE prefix series.
