REALLY graphically well made.

My only concern is for lay people, they will think then that they want MORE police officers to "guard" them?

I'm curious where you got that stat, Oleg. It sounds high to me.

Did some web searches. Several sources averaged 300-330 people per cop. Do we have better data?

Outstanding in every way.

You chose a perfect font, color and underscore scheme for the opening 1/300 statement. It is very well done. Great photo, too. Not too aggressive, just shows part of a sheepdog doing his job.

I believe this will be my first post on THR. :)
Nice Photo! Makes a good statement.

Perhaps, in very fine print at the bottom, you could reference the source.

This one really speaks to me....I like most of your other work...but this one was direct and to the point.

There is one officer for every 263 people in my area.. The thing is though, not all officers are on duty, in reality at any given time I would say there is 1 officer for every 700 people.

I think your stats are wrong....

In Washington D.C. where the highest density of police presence is counting ALL law enforcement there are 631 Officers to every 100,000 in population....this does not discount how many officers work in Federal and specialized jurisdictional law enforcement such as the FBI or NSA police and does not account for the 25 to 50% of administrative overhead where an average of 1 out of every 2 cops is actually "on the street".

In areas like NY there are about 300 cops for every 100,000 residence, however this includes Transit Police, Housing Authority, NARC, Administrative etc. So average about 1/2 of them actually being on a "beat" on the street.

But then again....it looks close enough for rock & roll.

Kind of reminds me of the old adage: There are lies. There are damn lies. And, then, there are statistics.

What qualifies statistically as a 'cop'? How many of those cops are actively detering crime and how many are supporting those on patrol on the streets? If you take into account all of the brass that surely count as cops, but don't get out from behind their desks, I'd bet you'd only have one bodyguard for every thousand or more people!

Still, Oleg, that's some mighty fine work. The lighting, composition, shading...all top shelf. Ichiro Nagata has a rival in the wings.

nice work! i like it, and i get it.

but as odysseus said:
"My only concern is for lay people, they will think then that they want MORE police officers to "guard" them?"

maybe some small or subdued text, saying something like "Arm Yourself" or "Protect Yourself"... just a thought. again, very nice work.

You need a typeset rather than typewriter apostrophe in "There's".

Your numbers are about right. US population is around 295,000,000. There are approximately 870,000 LEO's in the US. 339 : 1.

I like it, but I also wonder about the response being, "we need more cops."

My county (James City) is 730 to 1.

I think Oleg is correct based on the information I was able to locate.

According to the United States Census the population of the United States on April 1, 2000 was 281,421,906

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics there were 796,518 full-time law enforcement officers in the United States in 2000.

281,421,906 / 796,518 = 1 in 353

I'd leave off the "24/7" in the caption. They can't be your bodyguards anytime, truth be told.

Another great one Oleg. Out of curiosity, when do you post the new posters to your site? Some never seem to make it over there. I can always look back through your older posts, but when it comes to someone with 4000+ posts, it can sometimes be hard to find exactly what I am looking for.

Excellent work, Oleg. I really like this one.

Very "classy". Nice graphic, and fonts. Doesn't degrade cops, in fact photo is impressive. Gives a great wake up message.

One of your best - if not THE best!

October 12, 2005, 02:30 PM
my area=
we have 200+ officers for 120,000 BUT only ~80 officers on duty at any given time

add in the UC police, we're still at something like 1 officer for every 1000 people!

I think there needs to be something in regards to protecting yourself. It's good, but you know how "they" think, and it will go right over their heads. Their idea of personal responsibility is working to getr more cops on the streets, not protecting themselves personally.

Oleg- I like it as always, but you usually carry your work through to a conclusion.

Here is what I would see as that conclusion (real quick and dirty)
