I have a chance to pick up a never been fired 12ga streetsweeper for a song! I need to know if it is a class three gun or does it fall under any other laws that a "normal" shotgun would not?

I believe they were reclassified as Destructive Devices (?; "non-sporting", with a bore over .50") along with the USAS 12 under Klinton, so they'd need to be registered with ATFE and a tax paid on the transfer. Other than that, every one I've fired and handled has been an absolute PITA to unload and show clear, since the drum can only be rotated one way manually (you have to pull the trigger to get it to rotate the other way).

Yep, they are considered Destructive Devices and if it isn't already registered, it is contraband. ATF won't let you register them anymore. Time's up.

Can't you register new DDs?

Or is this that they were all supposed to be registered already, hence no more of these can be registered unless made new?

They had a grace period to register the Street Sweepers, which has expired.

It's a little more complicated than just giving ATF $200. You will need to file (2) ATF FORM 4s along with the money. The Form 4 must be signed by your "Chief Law Enforcement Officer" aka CLEO. This means your local sheriff and/or police chief must approve of the purchase. You also submit photographs and fingerprints and undergo a FBI background check.

wow thanks mp5 i think i am going to pass this up i am leaving for Iraq again in dec and i hate to say it but it seems like alot of trouble for a shotgun. I know that the CLEO in newport ri will never sign off on it! thanks again i think i am going to give the 200 to the NRA!

There is a way to make an unregistered USAS12 or Streetsweeper legal though. First, remove and get rid of the barrel. A barrel-less USAS12 or Streetsweeper is a title I gun because it no longer has a bore >.5" (can't measure the bore w/o a barrel!). Then submit a form 1 to register the gun as a DD. Then get another barrel for the firearm once approved (you don't want to use the original barrel) and you now have a legal DD.

Pretty funny. I'm sure your future cellmates will also be impressed with your idea as they mount their barrels one by one in your "barrel-less" receiver.

For those who are not familiar with such topics, the receiver/ frame etc. constitutes the "firearm" and not the barrel. I'm sure CleverNickname knows this and just wanted to have a little fun at the expense of the those who may not be familiar with US firearms laws.
