Greetings. I've got some fairly new Federal LE-132 00 2 3/4 shot shells and they have these white flakes on them and in the box. Not a whole lot, but here and there. The base brass is shiney and new and the crimping does not appear to be leaking anything. Any ideas? It's almost the consistancy of sand.

Possibly shot buffer that accidentally got in during packaging?

Not sure what shot buffer is. I was thinking that it sure looks like styrofoam flakes, but am not certain of this.

Buffer gets everywhere. if you use an indoor range that sees a lot of shotgun use you'll track it everywhere.

Agree with above, shot buffer. Cut one open and you will see.

Thanks guys. So is there a safety issue if I find some in a new box of shells?

No, if the shells themselves aren't leaking.

Tidbit

Flour, Malto-Meal or Grits leak more than Grex Buffering.

In case anyone ever wondered...;)

Snort some. If you get a buzz, it's cocaine.

And remember, if you shoot that out of a shotgun, it's use of a biological weapon, which is NAUGHTY...

No its not cocaine, but it could be nitroglycerin. Old sticks of dynamite get a buildup of white crystals on them from the nitro leaching through the paper. :what:

Nope..., hit'm with a hammer and there was zero blow back. http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/smiley_bucktooth.gif

Dave, Looking closer at one box they are leaking from the crimp. There is a little daylight in some of the folds and I can see the buffer and a few grains do come out when I tap it on the crimp / shell upside down. Do you think this whole batch could be suspect? Would shooting one of them be dangerous?

Shouldn't be dangerous, but the pattern from any leaking shells might be suspect.

Yes Sir!

Being a shotshell reloader -

Many times have just stuck a new shell in the MEC and got a better crimp.

On my reloads, sometimes getting "one more time" I have used candle wax or electrical tape to "seal" the crimp.

On my heavy pellet loads, including Buckshot, not uncommon for a crimp to not want to behave. I was using Win Grex Buffering, and researching flour, grits, Malt-Meal...for buffers too.

Candle wax or electrical tape always worked.

I had the same problem recently with ALL of the Remington #4 and most of the #1 I bought. It was leaking out. Patterns were crap on the leaky rounds, but at HD ranges, who cares?

I just won't buy any Rem ammo for awhile. I have never had Federal, Winchester, PMC, S&B, or Brenneke do that.

Mostly it was just a PITA to clean up.
