new rifle needs a scope

Hello all, got a scope question. I have recently inherited a 300 win mag and was thinking about what to top it with. Funds are tight so I’m limited to about $300, so I have been looking at Weaver or Bushnell. My first question is there any real difference between the Weaver Grand Slam and the Classic V ? Second how does the Bushnell 3200 rate with the Weaver? And third, will these three scopes stand up to the pounding of a .300 win mag? I have read good things about all three and just wanted some first hand knowledge on them. By the way, I am looking around a 5 x 15 power and any advice where to find good deals would be appreciated. :)

1- not sure about weaver's new stuff.
2- the bushnell 3200 is a good scope, and i'd do it long before weaver.
3- the 3200 will, and can only assume the weavers will, too.
4- leupold 4-12 is what you are looking for.
if you decide on leupold or zeiss conquest, the map pricing will make them all about the same price. if you know a secret handshake, you can get them brand new for significantly less from authorized dealers. don't pay retail for either zeiss or leupold - no need to.
check out www.bearbasin.com for a start. i've done business w/ them before, and would do it again. but, i wouldn't pay their asking price on leupold/zeiss.

Don't forget Burris. For $300 you really aren't that limited.
Go to midwayusa.com to shop around a little.

If you can't find what you need there, e-mail me or post here with what you want. I can sell NIB scopes at $15 over cost. Way below retail and in most cases several dollars below SWFA or BearBasin.

Hi Allen. What would it cost for shipping? Just curious.
jeffrice6. Hi. Does the $300 include the rings and mounts? It's not just the scope.

What size game are you thinking about, and what sort of distance?

Well I would like to use it on an elk, mullys, and a possible Alaskan hunt some day (moose and possibly bear). Truth is haven’t gone hunting in years but I like having the equipment should the opportunity arise. I have Leupolds on most of my rifles, and I love them, but I would like to change it up with another quality product and try to save some bucks in the process. So I appreciate all the advice and keep it coming.

IMO, the 2 most common scope mistakes are #1- cheap glass, and #2 too much magnification. $300 should get you past #1, especially if you don't go overboard with #2. I would have said 3-9X was plenty, then I got to your Alaska comment and I wouldn't be ashamed to drop that to something in the 2-7X area. alot of 2 digit X's starts to work against you when you're out in the sticks.
My .300 wears a 3.5X10 Leupold but I wouldn't want that much glass for a hunt where shots might be on moving game, might be in the thickets and might be closer than 50 yards. (just because it's a MAGNUM, doesn't mean you hafta shoot 400 yards)
You probably couldn't go wrong with a 3-9X for good quality glass within your dollar threshold.
(BTW, Poor mounting tools/techniques is really #2- I lied for the sake of this discussion.)

Hi Allen. What would it cost for shipping? Just curious.
Sunray I just mailed a Leupold 2.5X8X36 to a person in Chicago for $370.00 which included the $9.00 in shipping to him. Have never shipped a scope to Canada so I don't know what the shipping would be. Sometimes it is cheaper to ship an item to Canada than it is to another state in the USA.

if you are serious about one day going on a rough-country hunt (alaska, rocky mountains, or anything else that requires extensive travel), a scope is not the proper place to try and save money. the bushnell 3200 is the lowest end scope you should even consider. the way i see it, your choices are (in no particular order) bushnell 3200, leupold vx-2, zeiss conquest, and leupold vx-3.
personally, if it were me, it would either be a vx-3 or zeiss.
good luck.

The Grand Slam is supposed to be noticeably brighter than the Classic V series. Any of the scopes mentioned should withstand .300 Win. Mag. I've not tried a Bushnell 3200, but a 4200 Elite is nice. I will second the vote for the Leupold 2.5-8x. I have a couple of these from the Vari-X III line that are wonderful, light, accurate, and tough. 1 MOA groups with a .416.... 'nuff said.

Bushnell Trophy, 3200, or 4200 series in a 4-12X40 AO would be my suggestion. Leo's are overpriced IMHO.
