I read that the Kahr K9 is approved for off-duty use by the NYPD. Kahr's website makes a big deal about that fact; apparently the list is fairly selective. i can't seem to find the list anywhere, though, so I was wondering if anyone here knew what was currently approved by the NYPD for carry when off duty.

Also, I'd be interested in knowing what is required for approval. DAO goes without saying, but what other criteria are there?

I don't know what the criteria is for off duty carry but the primary carry has what is referred to as a NY trigger. I believe that it is a 12 lb. trigger pull. The reason is to prevent an unintentional discharge under stressful situations. The Glock and Kahr line are accepted for off duty but I don't think it requires the NY trigger pull. Other pistols may also be allowed but I don't know about them.

It use to be that the only approved off duty for NY was a blued 4" or 2" .38 but as the Glocks were adopted I believe only those officers previously issued a .38 special were grandfathered in and allowed to continue this pratice. Recently I have only heard of the NY trigger glocks and now the Kahr, which is similar (in function) in 9mm.

Are 38spl snubs still allowed for officers that did not have them before and wish to use them for off duty and backup?

To the best of my knowledge, there are only five models approved as off-duty/back-up guns by the NYPD: the Kahr K9, the Glock G26, the S&W M3953TSW & M3914DAO and the Beretta 8000D Mini-Cougar. Of course, any of the approved full-sized models may also be carried off-duty, if the officer so desires. I believe only older officers who have been "grandfathered" are permitted to still carry wheel guns, whether as primary or back-up; newer officers have no choice, even for BUGs.

I don't know a thing about NYC's requirements, but I did run across this, the other day, on Kahr's site:

"The NYCPD trigger length of pull is 1/2" versus 3/8" on all other Kahr pistols. Trigger pull weight is the same as other Kahr pistols, between 7.5 and 9 lbs."

It was on this page: http://www.kahr.com/pistols_K9094c.html
