Glock 20 and 10mm

I've toyed off and on over the years, with getting a Glock 20, for camping, canoe trips, hunting backup, etc. I saw an ad for a Glock (factory) 6" "hunting" barrel for the G20. This is interesting...

In a different Glock ad, it stated that Winchester 10mm 175gr. Silvertips, clock at 1290 fps and 650 ft-lbs of energy (from the standard 4.6" barrel). Does anyone know what that same round would clock at, out of the 6" Glock barrel? (Any other ammo comparisons between the barrels would be welcome, too.)

One other thing - what are some GOOD adjustable sights for the G20? I'm not sure that I would want them, but I don't know...

This sounds like a good option for an outdoors sidearm...

Thanks.

Oh! One other question - Does anyone have a picture of the G20 with the 6" hunting barrel?

Thanks again.

Funny, I've considered the exact same thing for quite a while! I actually had a 29 for a while that I bought for camping, but I just can't get used to the squatty grip on any of the "baby" Glocks.

I couldn't find any chrono data on the 6" barrel, but I did find some interesting info...

Lone Wolf Distributing (http://www.lonewolfdist.com/products.asp?prod=10) plans to make a "long slide" for the 6" glock barrel by early 2006. It will probably cost as much as the Glock itself, but it looks great, and would work on a G21 if you had one...

For a hunting 10mm, I personally considered a JPoint or Doctor Optic rather than standard irons. I'd probably use my 10mm for night time stuff mostly, so the red-dot rear sight would be perfect.

Now you have me wanting one AGAIN. But I'd want one of the Tan frame models, just for the heck of it.

Someone else would have said it first, but I guess I will be the first: Doubletap ammo.

Winchester's 175gn 10mm STHP isn't doing anywhere near 1290fps from the G20's 4.6" barrel. To put it mildly, Winchester is "puffing" on the numbers just a bit. (One could justifiably be more accusatory).

While Winchester's catalog indicates that the STHP's alleged velocity is derived from a 5.5" factory test barrel, current chronograph data puts this round's actual velocity at about 1150fps from a G20 and about 1180fps from a 5" 10mm, like a Delta Elite or S&W 1006. From a 6" tube, the ol' STHP might barely break 1200fps.

Today, the STHP is, at best, a mid-range 10mm load using second generation bullet technology. Yes, it's a passable defensive load, but it's not the best available in factory 10mm ammo.

A 6" barrel will pump up the 10mm's velocity numbers, no question about that. An example: from a stock 4.6" G20, Double Tap's 135gn 10mm does 1600fps/768fps. When McNett chrono-ed that load using the G20 with a 6" KKM tube installed, he got 1785fps/955fpe. :what:

Agtman,
Holy crap! Do you think that is within a good margin of safety, or should a guy wear a flack jacket when touching one of those off? I saw a thread of Gtalk about a guy pushing loads over 1000ft-lbs.
Do you have experience with the LWD 45/10mm slide set-up?
Thanks for the info,
Ss

Meprolight True-Dot Adjustable Night Sights.

I prefer the fixed Meprolights though...

The 10mm doubletap loads are all standard pressure, so I would feel fine shooting them in a G20 with an upgraded recoil spring.

Agtman,

If he is in fact doing that from a standard-length G20, he's gonna regret it eventually. 800 ft/lbs is about max for a safe load from a 4.5-5" tube. Just think how much pressure it would take to develop near-44 mag level energy from the much smaller 10mm case. :uhoh: The 10mm is already an extremely high pressure handgun round at 44,000 PSI.

It was a 6" KKM 45-10 barrel. He was using Starline 10mm Magnum brass trimmed to length, BlueDot powder and CCI 350 primers. The bullet was a 165gr. Speer Gold Dot. OAL was 1.28".

Are you sure about that figure? To the best of my knowledge, SAAMI max pressure for the 10mm is 37,500 PSI.

Stinkyshoe:

Since DT keeps its 10mm loads within SAAMI max pressure limits for that cartridge (which I believe is the 37,500 figure referenced elsewhere), their loads are safe.

Regarding the GTalk guy supposedly getting 1000+fpe with a 10mm load, I have no idea.

I have a G20 with a 6" KKM barrel. If you are going to shoot hot loads, I suggest getting an aftermarket barrel that has a fully supported chamber. My G20 is my favorite gun to shoot. I load my own rounds, and I load them hot. Mcnett put a lot of good recipies in the 10mm reloading forum on Glocktalk.http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/fellony/G20.jpg

I prefer to take my deer with my Glock 20 with a 6" KKM barrel with my reloads. GT has a forum dedicated to 10mm reloading too:neener:

If yoy wanta durable all around metal adjustable night sights that don't have known problems, get some MMC's.

When I'm not deer hunting, the G20 makes an excellent camping/hiking gun in beer country (even though the gun is a last resort - rather just ring my bear bells and raise my arms and yell).

If you want a great outdoors handgun, the G20 fits the bill otherwise a Marlin 40-70G guide gun/carbine is the bomb!

On top is a g20 with the comped barrel and as I remember it was a 6" or maybe 5.5". It was a kkm barrel. Accurate and reliable! I sold it after about 3700 rnds because I could never get over the squishy nature of the frame during recoil. Yes I know it is a "feature", but it was as much of a "feature" to me as Microsoft's "blue screen of death".
