i have a S&W 66 with a 2 1/2 inch barrel .357 and i have someone wanting to trade a AMT backup in .45 for it, looks like a neat little gun but have not heard much of AMT. i need feed back, would this be a good trade or not? as always, thanks for your help.

Keep your S&W 66!!! There is a June 23,2003 thread in this forum on this very subject. A search just might find it.

HELL NO!!!

The AMT's (.380 & .45 acp Backup and .45 acp Hardballer) had very spotty quality control. Some of the Backups worked okay but most wouldn't even fuction with hardball.

It would make a nice conversation piece.

I had the opportunity (misfortune) ro shoot an AMT .45 backup some years ago and without a doubt it was the most painful awful gun I haver ever shot. The trigger pull must have been 20lbs., keep your 66 and you can thank me later.

AMT? Maybe if the guy sweetens the deal with $1,000 or so.

I'll keep the 66, thanks for the feed back, you all help me and I feel like I can really trust all you THRers. This could have been a mistake that if the gun would fire I would most likly use it on myself:)

Smith 66 is one of the truly alltime great revolvers, IMO. :)

Backup is sort of a cross between a curiosity and a joke, IMO.

had - HAD - a .380 Backup. when it did function, it was one of the nastiest recoiling guns i have ever fired. stung my palm good. cannot imagine firing one in .45. i was really happy to see it go down the road with my money back in my pocket. it was a pretty thing tho.
