I live in Texas. Do any fellow Texans on this board know if putting detachable mags on SKS's is legal. I've heard yes and no depending on who I ask. I know their generally not as reliable as the fixed 10rders. Friends usually ask this question and I was wanting to know the answer myself. If they are illegal than their are a lot of outlaws here in Texas:D .

I don't know if I recall if this totally correct, but I believe there is a section of legal code (922R, or something) that forbids converting a post-1989 foreign made "sporting rifle" into an "assault rifle". However, you can make your rifle 922R compliant by adding a certain number of U.S.-made parts. I understand this is why Century Arms puts American made trigger groups in their WASR10s. This is also where a good chunk of Tapco's business comes from.
Someone here can probably give you a much better explanation.
I also suggest you check out surplusrifle.com or Tapco's website for more information.

There's a certain number of foreign made parts that can be in the SKS that qualifies it so that it can only have a certain number of "banned" parts that can be on it.
Usually you have to removed one banned part, before you can add another. So, maybe you remove the bayonet and lug, so you can add the detachable magazines.
Or you can replace some foreign parts with US made parts so that it no longer qualifies under the assault weapon rules. I believe, depending on where you're SKS came from, that the trigger group and stocks are usually the first parts replaced.
There's a web site that explains it all in great detail (if I could find the site again quickly I'd have given the link here).

My SKS and most of my friends are the Yugo 59/66's. I like mine like it is, I use it as my full-time truck rifle. I have a fancy poodleshooter for Hi-cap use.:D So if I tell my buddies to install the requiered 7 US parts then the hi-cap mags would be OK?
