Didn't see that coming.

He was actually kinda growing on me...no flames please.

I like Blackhawk's earlier comment in another thread about him being like a pet spider. Very apt.

No offense, Betty.

The whole idea of "embedded reporters" is a real work in progress. You have to believe that there will be other screw ups, resulting in the reporter being sent home. I'm glad that the Pentagon decided there's no grace period for actions like this-one screw up that could endanger our troops and you get punted. And the best part of all...it was Geraldo! :neener: geegee

Geraldo is woefully ignorant about military operations. He's a motor-mouth who believes any thought that drifts across his mind should be shared with the world.

He's pathetic in the way that an exhibitionist is.

I saw the map bit, and he should have been slammed face first in the sand by one of the Screaming Eagles after asking why he was smoothing it before the camera shot.

I just listened to Chris Jansing on MSNBC say that "Geraldo" was "escorted back" to Kuwait for violating policy by (THIS is DIFFICULT for me to understand. How CAN a reporter be SO DUMB!!) revealing a military objective of the 101st. I usually take no pleasure in another man's misfortune, but in this case I'm glad to hear that this elitist, gun for me but not for you "b" got part of his comeuppance.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. That's one less idiot in the fray.

What I find interesting, is that Geraldo did his "diagram in the sand" bit not once, but twice, in the space of a half hour, and nobody stopped him. Not the anchor at home, nor any of the troops with him.

Geraldo is so good at being an idiot! I will never forget one of his live reports from Afghanistan: they showed contrails (supposedly from B-52s) and Geraldo kept saying "the bombs should be impacting any time now..." He kept that routine up for almost half an hour and, of course, no bombs ever fell. It was absolutely hilarious.

Right now, I'm watching a live Geraldo report from a town about 60 miles south of Baghdad. He must not have been expelled....

Is there anything to stop him from remaining "in country" w/o official DOD support?

Reporting with the 101st from Baath Party headquarters.

He mentioned something about he "doesn't mind being sent on this mission by the 101st..." or some such. Maybe he was taken off the most forward lines and moved back a bit to a less critical area?

boing: Maybe he was taken off the most forward lines and moved back a bit to a less critical area? If I had to bet, that's where my money would be right now because in the FNC live report he kept insisting he was "still in Iraq" and that he was "not expelled from Iraq" but he never insisted he was still with his assigned unit. If the reports had absolutely no basis, he'd have said, "Hey, there was no trouble whatsoever. I'm still with the same unit."

It just smelled like his assurance was an equivocation.

But there are too many facts still out.

Apparently the reports of Riversa's demise are premature as he isn't being taken out of Iraq via the 101st. He was at the Baath headquarters and while that might not be the furthest front lines, they were only about 60 miles away from Saddam Central. He sure as heck was not being escorted out as claimed. I don't think that if he were being 'expelled' as claimed that they would have stopped to let him do a newscast.

They're handling this wrong. Could you imagine him having said the same thing during the siege of Bastogne? McAuliffe would have said something sad, mournful and pithy, had him hanged or shot and moved on with business.

Twenty minutes tops. In todays world it would have taken up a half hour slot with commercial breaks.

Inever understood how Fox News would hire a Clinton apologist like him in the first place. He is a consummate showman and when I saw the interview he did with the 101st in Afghanistan, I think the commander there saw it too.

...never the less, what CNN reports does not make it a reality.

Per that paragon of truth Reuters:

"He was with a (U.S.) military unit in the field and the commander felt that he had compromised operational information by reporting the position and movements of troops," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told Reuters.

"The commander thought it best to get the reporter out of his battle space and we understand he is being removed from Iraq," Whitman said.

Geraldo was on Bill O'Reilley radio show at noon today, claims there is no truth to the story, that it was fabricated as an attack on him.

Just did a quick search on both CNN.com and Foxnews.com, and can't seem to find ANY story about this, either confirming or denying.

Early this morning, Fox talking head (they all sound alike to me) apologised for calling Geraldo an "embedded" reporter. Seems he is NOT assigned to the 101st, he is merely hitchhiking! Seriously.

I used to let Geraldo piss me off. He is there, with our people and he supports them. He is doing a good job. I saw the sand map thing. Everyrthing he said was said by someone else, except on a real map.
Geraldos OK.

ooops just read this....
WASHINGTON (March 31) - Veteran reporter and former talk show host Geraldo Rivera, a correspondent for Fox News, was asked to be removed from Iraq by the U.S. military for reporting Western troop movements in the war, the Pentagon said Monday.

I saw the original report early this morning and it made me rather uncomfortable. I think that this guy's ego gets in his way. He is one of the most entertaining reporters, but sometimes he should just put a cork in it.

On the other hand, he is not Arnett, who is intentionally damaging to our efforts.
